Saint Leo: Women’s Lacrosse Drops Battle with Gannon, 15-14

via press release – photo via SL web site   SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker to Gannon University on Friday evening, as the Golden Knights scored nine goals in the second half to take the come-back win, 15-14, at University Turf Stadium. It was a battle between the two squads the whole game, as both teams would put up runs of goals and counter each other every possession. Saint Leo saw senior Caroline Fraser lead the team in point as she dished out three assists and tallied a goal. Sophomore Leslie Ferguson tallied a hat trick as she led the Lions with three goals. On the defensive end of the ball, senior Danica Leili caused three turnovers and snagged two groundballs. Records: Saint Leo 2-2 | Gannon 1-1 How it happened 1H | Caroline Fraser started hot for the Lions as she saw the field very well. First, she found a cutting Leslie Ferguson who tallied the first goal of the game, then Fraser recorded her second assist within 30-seconds of action as she dished the ball to fellow senior Emily Pittenger, who gave the Lions a 2-0 lead. The Golden Knights would bounce back with five-straight goals. Freshman Lexie Walstad would halt the bleeding, and just half a minute later, Ferguson added her second of the game on a free position goal. Gannon’s leading goal scorer in Leilani King would tack on her second of the half before Saint Leo would go on a four-goal run of their own to close the half. Kaylah Walstad sank the first of the four for the Lions, and Katherine Larson tallied another just 20 seconds later. Fraser would add her lone goal of the game, and freshman Sabrina Sanacore tallied the final of the half. Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Halley tallied seven saves in the half for the green and gold. Both teams took 15 shots in the half. | Saint Leo 8-6. 2H | The Lions tacked the first goal of the second half making it 9-6 for the home team. Gannon was able to get two more on the board before an Abbie Ross free position goal gave the Lions another two-goal lead. Back-to-back Golden Knight goals tied up the game with 18:52 left to play. Larson scored her second of the match to break the tie, and Kelsey Burns added her first of the game to give the Lions a two-goal lead once again, 12-10. But the Golden Knights charged back, scoring two more of their own, tying it again with 12:22 to play. Freshman Delany Chrisco broke the tie with a free position shot at the 10:15 mark, but a Gannon goal tied it again just a few minutes later. With 4:07 left to play, Fraser flicked the ball to Burns for a beautiful goal, giving the Lions the lead. However, Gannon would tally two over the final three minutes, giving the visitors the game.   • Caroline Fraser now has 34 career assists and 11 assists on the young season. Her 34 assists tie second all-time on the Saint Leo leader board, and she is just nine away from breaking the school record. She is also just four assists from breaking the single-season assists record.
  • Kelsey Burns now has 84 career goals and is just four goals away from the Saint Leo Career goals record.
  • Saint Leo forced Gannon into 19 turnovers, but Gannon won 19 draw controls.
  • Gannon was led by Leilani King, who scored five goals and added an assist.
