Saint Leo: Women’s Lacrosse Takes Down Wilmington, 20-7 in Home Opener

via press release – photo via SL web site   SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s lacrosse team shut down the visiting Wilmington University Wildcats in the Lions’ home opener on Wednesday afternoon as Saint Leo grabbed a 20-7 win at University Turf Stadium. Eleven different Lions scored in the game, with ten of the players recording at least two points. Senior Kelsey Burns had a day as she recorded her 100th career point with a hat trick and two assists for a team-high five points. Fellow senior Caroline Fraser followed with four points, one goal and three assists. The Basics Saint Leo topped Wilmington, 20-7 Location: University Turf Stadium | Saint Leo, Fla. Records: Saint Leo 2-1 | Wilmington 1-2 How it happened … 1H | Saint Leo jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Wilmington was able to get on the board, scoring three-straight to make it just a one-goal game. Senior Kelsey Burns would add her first of the game off a dish from fellow senior Caroline Fraser. Katherine Larson added another for the green and goal to double up the score on the Wildcats. Wilmington would snag another tally, but Burns’ second goal of the game brought it to 7-4 for the Lions. Freshman Sabrina Sanacore tacked on the final goal of the half for the Lions. Saint Leo recorded three saves in the first half by freshman Erin Davis, who earned her first career start. Saint Leo also won nine of the 12 draw control attempts in the first period. | Saint Leo 8-4 2H | Burns recorded her third goal of the game to open the second half as she wove through the defense just 40 seconds into play. Leslie Ferguson added another for the green and gold before Wilmington was able to strike. However, the Wildcats tallied three-straight goals, cutting the lead to just 10-7 with 22:33 left to play. Following that possession, Saint Leo turned it on and scored ten unanswered goals to run away with the win. Saint Leo improved its clear attempts, going a perfect nine for nine in the half, and sophomore Rebecca Halley made five saves in net.   • Burns scored her 100th point against the Wildcats, claiming 82 career goals and 18 assists. She is just 18 goals away from her 100th career goal, and just five goals away from tying the Saint Leo Career Goals Record.
  • Fraser is now just 11 assists from tying the Saint Leo Career Assists Record.
  • Saint Leo again split time in net between freshman Erin Davis and sophomore Rebecca Halley. Davis earned her first career start and first career win after tallying three saves in the first half. Halley added a team-high five saves in the second half.
  • Emily Pittenger, Leslie Ferguson, and Sabrina Sanacore each tallied two goals and an assist in the game.
  • Freshman Bailee Hurd scored her first career goal against the Wildcats.
