Scots Out Senior Panthers

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
by Pete Vining St. Andrew’s traveled to Ft. Lauderdale Friday to take on Pine Crest in the second round of the FHSAA play-offs in what started out as a tough defensive battle.  The Scots got on the board early as senior Steve Reall fed fellow senior Grant “Taco” Mahler on the crease.  However, this would be the only score in the first quarter.  In the second, SA stretched the lead to 4-0 before Cody Shamon’s first of his two goals.  Jake Levine responded for the Scots with an EMO goal to make it 5-1.  The third quarter saw the margin expand to 10-2 with senior Sam Talkow scoring unassisted for the Panthers.  The final tally ended up 13-3. The story of this game is the passing of an era.  The field was filled with many of the boys who make up a portion of what is arguably the best senior class the State of Florida has ever produced.  All of the gentlemen mentioned in this paragraph are seniors.  For starters, how about the D1 commit face-off matchup of Taco vs. Talkow?  The Panthers’ Diener twins, Kyle and Michael (who played on man up with his long pole) on defense were outnumbered by Michael Armour, Jason Weprin, Cole Borg, Scott Schechner  and Reid McCool.  If last year’s Lacrosse Magazine’s South Player of the Year, PC’s Harris Stolzenberg had played, it would have been interesting to match his numbers vs. the Scots’ Conor Whipple.  It was good to see Stolzenberg suited up after having missed most of the season due to a concussion.  Best wishes to Harris, his little brother Mikey and the Stolzenberg family. The Scots’ Nick Ranta chipped in with a goal and teammate Alexander Bartzokis played extensively on clears and defense.   SA’s Andy Wheeler and Corey Etcheverry had strong outings at midfield and in goal respectively.  Finally, PC’s Matthew Busel and Will Wittich played well.   The Scots’ seniors simply out numbered the Panthers’. If I missed a anyone, my apologies.  I tried to touch on all on both teams and FLN’s budget does not include a research staff! The Scots travel to Columbus Catholic in Miami next Tuesday in the regional final with the winner headed to the Final Four in West Orange next weekend.  FLN will again be tweeting on @floridalx. Stats: SA:  Reall 4g 2a, Levine 4g 1a, G. Mahler 1g 1a, Whipple 1g 1a, Lutes 2g, Ranta 1a, Guldin 1a, K. Mahler 1g PC:  Shamon 2g, Talkow 1g
