Shannon Gilroy Selected to SynapseSports.com National Weekly Honor Roll
Gainesville, Fla. – Freshman Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) was named to the SynapseSports.com National Weekly Honor Roll after her outstanding play against No. 10 Penn State last Sunday. Gilroy is the third Gator this season to earn a national weekly honor, all from SynapseSports.com, as Jamie Reeg (Atlantis, Fla.) was the National Defensive Player of the Week on Mar. 26, and Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) earned a spot on the honor roll on Mar. 13. Gilroy, who was also named ALC Rookie of the Week, is the sixth Gator in school history to garner this national weekly award. Gilroy led the Gators with a career-high five goals and tied her own school record with seven draw controls to lead Florida past No. 10 Penn State, 20-11, in the ALC home opener last Sunday. The Northport, N.Y., native went 3-for-3 on free-position shots, also a school record, and added a ground ball against the conference foe. Gilroy currently leads the Gators and ranks 24th in the nation in draw controls, totaling 55. The midfielder, who averages 3.93 a game, is just six shy of the school season record of 61 set by teammate Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) in 2010. Eight other women’s lacrosse players earned weekly honors last week from SynapseSports.com. North Carolina’s Sloan Serpe garnered Defensive Player of the Week, Cornell’s Jessi Steinberg was named Offensive Player of the Week and Loyola’s Annie Thomas earned her second-straight Rookie of the Week honor. Serpe marked the Blue Devils’ leading scorer and held her scoreless and without a shot on the night. Serpe caused three turnovers and gathered two ground balls against Duke. Two days later against Virginia Tech, Serpe had a draw control and a caused turnover in the Tar Heels’ 15-4 win. Steinberg powered the Big Red to the upset of Princeton on the road, as her fourth goal of the game was the overtime game-winner. She added an assist and snared three draw controls as Cornell won a key conference game. Thomas was instrumental in the Greyhounds’ upset of Notre Dame as Loyola knocked the Irish from the ranks of the unbeaten. She opened the week with a three-point game in the Big East win over Cincinnati before notching four goals and an assist in the win over ND. She had three goals and an assist in the pivotal nine-goal run that iced the game for the Greyhounds in the second half. Alex Aust of Maryland, Laura Barber of Vermont, Katie Ferris of Massachusetts, Heather Ziccarelli of High Point and fellow ALC player Erin Fitzgerald of Northwestern all joined Gilroy on the honor roll. The Gators return to action on Saturday when they host nationally-ranked Vanderbilt in ALC play at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The game will be broadcast statewide on Fox Sports Florida with a noon start time.
