Six Ave Maria University Lacrosse Players Named to All Conference Team

HARDEEVILLE, South Carolina – – Six members of the women’s lacrosse team were named to the South All-Regional Team on Sunday afternoon prior to the Regional Championship game.
Abby Castro (Miami, Fla.), Lydia Buckley (Saint Louis, Mo.), Valeria Tkacik (Annapolis, Md.), Kelsey Hughes (Hobe Sound, Fla.), and Catie Cox (Chesterfield, Mo.) are all-region selections. Kaylin Mayeski (Naples, Fla.) was named Honorable Mention All- Region.
Castro played and started in all 13 games this season. The sophomore finished the season with 14 goals and a team high five assists. She also led AMU with 20 caused turnovers. Castro had her best game against Truett McConnell where she tallied three goals and three assists.
Buckley played and started in all 13 contests, at attack for the Lady Gyrenes. Buckley has tallied 21 goals, three assists, and 24 points for AMU. She recorded five points and the game winning goal in the double time sudden death victory over LaGrange. Buckley finished the season sixth in draw controls in the NWLL with 37; including a career high 11 draw controls against Davenport.
Tkacik started every game this season for AMU. The freshman played both midfield and defense and often had the task of shutting down the opponent’s leading scorer. Tkacik finished the season with five goals and four assists for nine points. She also tallied 30 ground balls, 10 caused turnovers and 18 draw controls.
Cox, a midfielder/attack player, started all 14 games for the Lady Gyrenes. She leads the team with 49 ground balls and second on the team winning 25 draw controls. Cox has also tallied 14 goals and 14 caused turnovers. Her best game came against St. Andrews when she netted five goals, picked up seven ground balls, and won three draw controls.
Hughes has been the leader of the Gyrenes defense, starting all 14 games. She has picked up multiple ground balls and caused turnovers on eight different occasions and scored her lone goal of the season against Truett McConnell College.
Mayeski, a freshman was second in scoring for the Lady Gyrenes and tied for second in assists. She finished the season with 16 goals and four assists in 13 games. Mayeski recorded hat tricks against Reinhardt and Truett McConnell.
The other all-region selections from SCAD are Charlotte Cutts, Jordan Cook, Jenny Danko, Shannon Flaherty, Shaina Levin, Kayla Nelson, Alyssa Stetson and Taylor Vaccaro.
