Riley Reagan and Taylor Patrizi each scored three goals but Stetson couldn’t overcome another slow start as Marquette handed the Hatters a 22-12 setback, Sunday at Valley Dome in Milwaukee, Wis.
As they’ve done in each of their previous games this season, the Hatters (0-3) fell behind early and couldn’t come all the way back. Marquette (3-2) scored seven of the game’s first eight goals and held a 7-1 lead less than 10 minutes into the game.
Patrizi stopped the bleeding for Stetson with a goal at 20:10 of the first half, but the Golden Eagles scored six straight after that for a 13-2 lead.
Stetson mounted a comeback late in the first half, scoring the five of the final seven goals before halftime to cut Marquette’s lead to 15-7 at intermission.
Marquette opened the second half with five straight goals, taking a 20-7 lead with 21:06 remaining in the game. The Hatters once again staged a rally, scoring five of the final six goals but it wasn’t enough.
Riley, a freshman, enjoyed the best game of her brief career, adding three assists and two ground balls to her three goals. Quinn Roe led the Hatters with four ground balls overall.
Liza Diamond and Kiera McCarthy split time in goal. Diamond made four saves while McCarthy stopped two shots.
Marquette’s Grace Gabriel scored five goals to lead the Golden Eagles.
The Hatters next host Holy Cross, 3 p.m., Sunday, March 4.
