JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville scored seven unanswered goals to wrap up a 15-5 victory over San Diego State at D.B. Milne Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Taylor McCord (Jacksonville, Fla.) led JU scoring four goals on four shot attempts. McCord also added two assists for the Dolphins which improved to 2-2 on the year with the wire-to-wire win.
McCord started off the scoring with an unassisted goal two minutes into the game followed by a score 12 seconds later from junior Morgan Derner (Lake Mary, Fla.) as JU grabbed a 2-0 advantage. A second year program that is making its first ever trip to the East Coast, San Diego State did not go away quietly as the Aztecs continued to challenge the Dolphins throughout the first half.
JU eventually grabbed a 6-3 lead at the break as junior Kaitlin Stewart(Annapolis, Md.) scored on a free position shot with three minutes remaining.
“We struggled to get into an offensive rhythm and had a few to many turnovers in the first half,” said JU Head Coach Mindy McCord. “San Diego State did a good job with their transition defense so they deserve some credit for causing some of our miscues. They certainly gave us a test.”
The two teams traded goals the first eight minutes of the second half as the Dolphins held onto an 8-5 advantage with 22 minutes left to play. Freshmen Kelsey Wiglesworth (Towson, Md.) then helped jump start the 7-0 run with 21 minutes left when she scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from McCord.
Senior Amanda Hurley (Columbus, Ga.) added a pair of free position goals during the game-ending run to bring her team leading total to 10 this season on 11 shot attempts.
“We did a better job of capitalizing on our opportunities when we had them in the second half and Karli made some nice saves in the cage that allowed us to pull away,” said McCord.
Senior goalie Karli Tobin (Moorestown, N.J.) matched a season high with 10 saves for Jacksonville.
