UT Men: #14 Spartans Cage Griffins 21-7

  • Sam Watts won the face-off to start the game. 
  • Which gave Tampa the first goal of the game from Andrew Kew, assisted by Conor Whipple.
  • Westminster wasted no time to respond at 11:14.
  • Kew strikes again with Whipple to give Tampa a 2-1 lead.
  • At 7:10 Hunter Van Horn took an unassisted goal to strengthen Tampa’s lead.
  • Less than a minute later, Bryan Wright with Kew score.
  • With 4:00 minutes left the Vetter brothers team-up. Goal by Matt Vetter from Chris Vetter.
  • The brothers strike again to make it 6-1, Tampa.
  • The Griffins come back with one goal.
  • The final goal of the period comes from Whipple, assisted by Wright. Tampa leading 7-2 before the 2nd period.
2nd Period
  • Westminster took the first goal with 14:29 on the clock.
  • With 1:24 left in the period, Kew tacks on another with help from Whipple.
  • Westminster manages to sneak one by.
  • Tampa leading 8-4 going to half-time.
3rd Period
  • 11:15 into the period, Wright picks up a groundball to score for Tampa.
  • 9:05 marks Kew’s 100th career goal. Tampa now leading 10-4.
  • He strikes again to cushion the lead with an assist from Whipple.
  • Jake Mosher McGraw with Whipple scored a man-up goal.
  • Sean Giampietro scores, unassisted to give Tampa a 13-4 lead.
  • Wright snags his third goal of the game with an assist from A.J. Ferraro.
4th Period
  • Senior Jake Schmidt scores to make Tampa’s lead 16-3.
  • Whipple scores his seventh point of the night with an unassisted goal.
  • Westminster responds back, Tampa still leading 17-4.
  • Cameron Wolfe with 9:59 left tacks on another goal for Tampa.
  • Chris Cox at 8:13 makes the lead 19-4 for Tampa.
  • Westminster comes back with two goals.
  • James Pugliese comes through with a goal, assisted by Giampietro.
  • Freshman Connor Scanlin with 1:39 left in the game scores for Tampa.
  • Westminster answers with a goal, Tampa winning 21-7.
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Sam Watts went 14-21 in face-offs with 11 groundballs.
  • Kew scored six goals, including his 100th with one assist.
  • Whipple led the team to seven points with two goals and five assists.
  • Wright had three goals, one assist, and four groundballs.
  • Charlie Cummins led the defense in groundballs with six and five caused turnovers.
  • Marty Heyn tallied one groundball with four caused turnovers.
  • Freshman Chris Cox scored his first goal as a Spartan.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE: Sophomore Kew hit the 100 career goals mark. Currently with 102 so far, he sits at number two in career goals. He is the second Spartan to reach this milestone, now accompanying teammate Whipple in the 100-goal club.
