Vero Earns Big Win over #5 Boca Raton 12-11 on Monday

Thanks to Vero for providing this recap!   Half way through the season Vero may have finally found the solution to one of its biggest problems this year. Winton Roschach once again led the team in scoring with 4g and 1a, and for the second time this year, led his team back from 4 goal defecits scoring 3 of his teams last 4 goals in both games. He is having a brilliant senior year and has scored 34 goals already with 9 games remaining. Just as importantly, perhaps more so, was the effort of Ticer Pfeifer at faceoff. In Vero’s 3 losses the year they have been dominated at the faceoffs. In Vero’s 3 goal loss to St. Andrews the Scots controlled the face 18 of the 20 times. For the first time this year Pfeifer gave Vero a distinct advantage. He controlled 15 faceoffs and picked up 6 ground balls. Trailing by 4 late in the game Vero needed the ball and Pfeifer got it for them. In his first year as varsity starting goalie Brad Heckman improves with every game and his excellent passing has helped Vero in its transition from defense to offense. The usual suspects are now showing up in every game. Zach Funk had 2g and 1a, Tyler Martin scored his second goal in overtime to seal the win. Super sophs Chris Britton had 2g and Bennett O’Brien had 1g 1a. Jacob Coleman had 8gb, Derek Stanley had 5gb. I was unable to get the stats for Boca but they are obviously a really good team, and of course this game was a toss up until the end. The goalie made some nice saves and the long poles moved the ball across the midfield with excellent passes. On offense their ball movement was tremendous and most of their goals came after great passes, into the middle of, and behind Vero’s defense. It was a team effort with multiple players scoring. Boca Raton will be looking to climb out of their two-game losing streak (both one-goal road losses) as they travel to Pine Crest next week.  Vero continues their formidable stretch of games, hosting red-hot Spanish river Friday night.
