Vero Sweeps Boca Road Trip – Solid Defense Propels Vero Boys Past Spanish River 10-7

Thanks to Pete Vining for providing this write-up! The visiting Vero Beach Indians used solid fundamentals to defeat a pesky Spanish River Sharks team 10-7 in Boca Raton Thursday afternoon. With a score of 6-5 Vero at the end of third quarter, Vero’s depth made the difference late in the game. The Indians used an aggressive defense, led by Max Muller, Treyson Peirce and Derek Stanley to keep the Sharks off balance, and to that end Spanish River was unable to capitalize on nine man up opportunities. Vero enjoyed a four ground ball margin and won twelve of the twenty face-offs. In the end, the Indians won by doing all of the little things a bit better than the Sharks. Vero had twenty eight shots on goal while River had twenty nine. Both goalies, Jeff Ley of Vero and Jake Diamond of Boca had solid games in the cage. Vero’s LSM Spencer Sinclair’s hustle stood out and he captured five ground balls. The story to this writer is one of the passing of the torch to the next generation. Both coaches, Brian Johnson of Spanish River and Jon Moriarity of Vero Beach have college placements coming for some of their upper classmen, but many freshmen and sophomores played key roles for both teams. In addition, the JV game which preceded the varsity game showcased a ton of potential. We all talk about the role of the recreational leagues in the improved quality of play, and those of us who are fans are looking forward to the competition in the years ahead.
