TAMPA, Fla. – Behind a milestone effort from junior Amanda Voges, the University of Tampa women’s lacrosse team defeated the University of Indianapolis by a final score of 9-7 at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex, Friday evening.
The Spartans improve to 2-7 while the Greyhounds fall to 2-4 on their 2016 campaign.
Voges was a force on the field, netting a hat-trick while picking up two assists for five total points. The career-outing helped the attacker eclipse the 100 point milestone in just three years, becoming the first-ever Spartan women’s lacrosse athlete to notch 100 points.
Sophomore Natalie Carraway posted her own strong effort, scoring a pair of goals while assisting three other UT goals. The five points ranks second in Carraway’s career at Tampa. Freshman Rachel Crawford tallied two goals while sophomore Amanda Rom picked up three points with two assists and a goal to her credit.
The Greyhounds were the first to score in the opening stanza, picking up a man-up free-position shot to take a 1-0 lead over Tampa. Attacker Voges would even the score with her first of the contest, sending a fast pass from Carraway to the back of the net. After 10 defensive minutes, it would be Carraway that breaks the tie on a free-position attempt that would give UT a 2-1 lead over UIndy.
Moments later, Voges netted the 99th point of her Spartan career on a free-position of her own. The junior would reach the 100-point milestone on an assist to Rom, as the sophomore attacker pushed the Spartan lead to 4-1.
Indianapolis would chip away at the UT lead with a fast-break goal from Sydney Hauffman would put the margin at a 4-2 lead in favor of Tampa. Sophomore Carraway scored her fifth goal of the season at the 9:20 minute mark thanks to an assist from Voges to give UT a 5-2 lead. Goals from Voges and Crawford would finish the half with Tampa owning a 7-2 lead over UIndy.
The Greyhounds would not go down without a fight as Hana Priddy converted back-to-back free-position shots to push the score to a 7-4 margin. Freshman Paige Johnson would pad the tally after a pass from Carraway before another pair of back-to-back scores cut the Tampa lead to 8-6.
Attacker Crawford would net the final goal for UT at the 17:41 minute mark before Chalane Morrison of Indianapolis would answer with her own goal. The Spartan defense shutout the Greyhounds for the final 16 minutes of the contest to secure a 9-7 win.
Captain Amanda Parker was stalwart on defense, causing four UIndy turnovers to lead both squads in addition to three groundballs. The defensive corps of Parker, Liz Kramer, Abby Coccagna and Marissa Killpack helped stop the Greyhounds from successfully clearing the ball, as UIndy converted just 12-of-22 compared to a near-perfect 18-of-19 on UT’s side. Freshman Kramer finished with four groundballs, three draw controls and two caused turnovers while Killpack scooped up three groundballs.
Giving the Spartans multiple second chances on offense was Madison Creech, as the sophomore attacker picked up five groundballs to lead all athletes in the game.
Picking up the win in the net for Tampa was senior Caili Guilday (2-7) who limited the opposition to seven goals while notching eight saves.
The Spartans will welcome the Mercy Mavericks for a Tuesday night showdown at Naimoli, scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start. Live stats as well as a live video webcast will be made available through www.tampaspartans.com.
