LEBANON, Ill. – No. 6 Florida Southern rebounded from its one-goal loss against No. 3 Lindenwood (Mo.) on Friday by overwhelming previously-unbeaten McKendree University, 15-2, in Game 1 of Saturday’s unconventional doubleheader.
The Moccasins (10-2) gave the Bearcats (6-1) a taste of their own medicine in the blowout victory. In McKendree’s six wins this season, it averaged 20 goals per game while limiting the opposition to only three per.
A suffocating defensive effort limited the Bearcats to only two goals on six shots, the fewest by an opponent in both categories since the Mocs held Chowan University scoreless on one shot in a 22-0 win on March 13, 2013. McKendree also coughed the ball up 30 times, the most turnovers committed by an opponent this season.
Redshirt freshman Ashley Seborowski (Annapolis, Md.) and sophomore Taylor Gillis (Bel Air, Md.) split the first and second halves in the net for the Mocs, each making a pair of saves and giving up one goal. Seborowski, winner of two straight Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week awards, earned her eight win of the season.
Offensively, 10 different players scored for the Mocs, led by Emily Santoli (Fort Salonga, N.Y.). The freshman midfielder scored three times and added one assist. Senior Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.), junior Grace Donovan (Boise, Idaho) and freshman Cassidy Remmell (Ocean City, Md.) each scored twice.
Senior Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) opened the game with a breakaway goal at 25:37 in the first half. She received a long outlet pass from the neutral zone and beat McKendree goalie Amy Porta one-on-one to take a 1-0 lead.
After freshman Mia Fiore tied the game at 1-1 at the 23:25 mark, the Bearcats were held scoreless for the next 42:19.
Santoli scored consecutive goals 2:05 apart to give the Mocs a 3-1 lead. Hoover then scored two in a row, the first off an errant pass into the heart Bearcat defense that caught Porta off guard and bounced over her stick.
Donovan tacked on back-to-back scores, followed by a free position goal from freshman Ellie Schmidt (Collegeville, Pa.) to give the Mocs an 8-1 halftime lead.
FSC scored the first four goals out of the break. Sophomore Kendall Kerge (Edgewater, Md.) displayed a fantastic individual effort to strip McKendree junior Shirley Boland of the ball on a broken clear and take it the distance to extend the cushion to 11-1.
Remmell scored the first of her season-high two goals on a free position shot to give the Mocs their largest lead, 12-1, at the 12:59 mark.
Following a score from McKendree freshman Paige Salthouse, FSC sophomore Jackson Marshall (Gorhman, Maine) buried her first career goal. Senior Meghan Colucci (Glocester, R.I.) finished the scoring by collecting her own rebound off a saved shot for the put-back goal.
The Mocs will travel nearly an hour from Lebanon back to St. Charles, Mo., to conclude the doubleheader with a 9 p.m. contest against Adams State (0-2), hosted by Lindenwood University.
