Back To The Future – Saint Andrew’s and Saint Edward’s Renew Historic Rivalry

From what the crack research staff at FLN could figure out, 2011 was the last time SA and STED competed on the lacrosse field, but before that it was 2006.  For those of you who are new to the Florida lacrosse scene (that’s most of us because it is still pretty new in the big picture), SA and STED were two of the pioneers of the sport here.  In fact, I bet you would be surprised to know STED won the Florida State championship in both 1991 and 1993 and had three other final four appearances under current coach Andy Scheffer.  Coach Scheffer lead the Pirates from 1989 to 1994 and recently returned to the helm (get that Lee – a nautical reference ties right in)  to navigate the ever improving Florida lax waters. sted d sa guldin score Fast forward to Friday afternoon and the schools faced off in a spirited battle.  Austin Strazzulla shot a couple of canons and suddenly the Pirates were sitting on an early 2-0 advantage.  It looked like the Scots were going to walk the plank, but alas, STED’s  lack of depth and the wake up call issued by Strazzulla saved the visitors from a visit to Davy Jones’ locker.  The final was 18-8.  Kudos to the STED players – they left it all on the field and we know the Pirates are on a course to regain their past prominence in the years ahead. sted sa newhouse sted sa dykas sted mason heim For the Scots, Peter Dykas, Nick Iznaga, Nick Diamond, Davis Diamond, Brandt Guldin, SamBaker, Tyler Yarnall, Tito Thompson and Brian Fox scored goals. sted 6 13 sa 17 sted gage bartosh sa iznaga Let’s hope this historic match-up continues in the years ahead.
