Above – Kylie Dunmire (pictured here vs Winter Park) scored three goals and three assists and controlled most draws We don’t get a chance to see too many girl’s lacrosse games but when we saw that two of Central Florida’s top teams were set to play on Thursday night we made it out to Oviedo High School to catch the action. And boy did we ever get action!
Ellie Yenor (pictured here in the final four game last year) scored an amazing 9 goals last night and at times appeared to be unstoppable

Kylie Dunmire won the opening draw of the game as she would just about every draw of the first half.   They Lions used a very deliberate offense running sweeps and off- ball screens to break players open to cut through the middle.   Dunmire would put Oviedo on the board first. Timber Creek was the complete opposite of Oviedo’s offense.  Fast, run, and gun.  Ellie Yenor (Northwestern) would come right back for Timber Creek and tie it up.  We didn’t expect what happened next. What happened next was a complete domination by Oviedo for the rest of the half.  Wining all but two draws Oviedo rarely turned the ball over without getting quality shots first.   Jamie Lunt would score on a pass from Dunmire cutting through the middle. Then Cayla Shawfield came right back again off the draw.   Harper Bolt used her speed to  just slice through the middle and scored the 5th for Oviedo. The Lions used a ton of ball movement for which led to multiple shot opportunities on each possession. Outstanding goalie play by Hernandez kept TC in it through much of the half. Kylie Dunmire with a nice roll dodge and score made it 6-1. Then Dunmire to Luntz made it 7.  Timber Creek would finally get the ball back after roughly six minutes of possession by Oviedo only to run it down field and turn it over twice. Then it was Dunmire to Gipson to make  it 8 before a rare turnover by Oviedo gave the ball to the Wolves.  Timber Creek controlled the ball and a nice play led to a shot that sailed  just over the crossbar.  It marked the first good possession for Timber Creek since the 16 minute mark.  After back to back turnovers by both teams  Yenor ended up with the ball and finally got TC going again with a goal at the 6:28 mark.  That  would begin a period of back and forth with Yenor scoring and Oviedo coming back.  The first half ended with Oviedo 11 and Timber Creek 4, all by Yenor. Marianna Hernandez made a couple of huge saves for TC to keep the difference from being even greater. Clearly, the first half domination by Oviedo was the difference in the game, but the first three minutes of the second half is what would eventually seal the deal. Oviedo won the opening draw of the second half and controlled it for the first 2.5 minutes.  Timber Creek got it but once again gave it right back. Oviedo controlled it for another 2 minutes before turning it over again to the Wolves.  If Timber Creek had been able to get the ball back one minute earlier the outcome of this game may have been different. The first goal of the send half came at the 20:20 mark when Brianna Burnett scored unassisted to make it 11-5.  Timber Creek started winning the draws and quickly got the ball down low where they could isolate Yenor on the crease.  She scored her 5th, 6th, and 7th goals in quick succession to push the Timber Creek run to four goals in just over three minutes. Oviedo won a draw and ran down the clock before Kylie Dunmire would make ti 12-8 with 14:31 left on the clock. The two teams would trade goals by Haleigh Brooks (Mercer) for TC and Cayla Shawfield for Oviedo to make it 13-9 with 12:48 left in the game. Yenor looked unstoppable at times, picking up a ground ball off the draw and scored quickly for her 8th goal of the game.   Oviedo won the ensuing draw and after taking some time off the clock pushed the score up to 14-10. Yenor would come right back once again to score her amazing 9th goal of the game to make it 14-11 with 9:45 left to play.  Two minutes later Lauren Sherry (Ohio State) showed her speed for Timber Creek taking the ball the length of the field and closing the gap to two at 14-12. Jamie Luntz would become the fourth Oviedo player of the night to earn a hat trick (Harper Bolt, Cayla Shawfield, Kylie Dunmire), to make it 15-12.  The next two minutes saw fast and furious action up and down the field.  Oviedo tried desperately to take time off the clock but Timber Creek’s intensify on the defensive end of the field led to an Oviedo turnover.  After a furious rally and multiple shots Sabrina Guerrero scored to bring Timber Creek to within two. Timber Creek won the draw and put huge pressure on the Oviedo defense. The defense and Kat Schneeberger in goal was able to hold Timber Creek at bay until Haleigh Brooks scored to make it 15-14 as time expired. The game was as intense as any we have ever seen.  An amazing comeback by Timber Creek, stout defense by Oviedo down the stretch that did enough to win the game, and a nine goal effort by Ellie Yenor.   Oviedo clearly had an offensive game plan and they came out and executed well.
