
#10 Rollins Women Take Down #5 Grand Valley State

Abigail Cawley tallied nine points to lead the Tars to a big win
WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 18, 2022) – The 10th-ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team pulled off a mild upset on Saturday morning, defeating fifth-ranked Grand Valley State by a score of 15-11. The win pushes the Tars to 3-0 on the year, while the Lakers even their mark at 1-1.
Abigail Cawley led all players with nine points, tallying four goals and five assists to go along with two caused turnovers. Caroline Gastonguay chipped in with four goals and an assist, while Caroline Bailey added two goals. Rachel Schlesinger (2-0) got the win in goal, making seven saves on 18 shots.
Maddy Champagne notched a hat trick with three goals to go along with seven ground balls. Molly Bursinger, Maggie Hammer, and Ashleigh Rothe all added a pair of goals for the Lakers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- Caroline Gastonguay opened the scoring at the 8:32 mark of the first period on an assist from Claire Resit.
- After GVSU tied it at one, Abigail Cawley scored her first goal of the game, which was the first of seven consecutive Tar goals.
- Abigail DeGroat, Abigail Cawley, and Caroline Gastonguay all found the net in the final 4:18 of the period to build the lead to 5-1.
Second Quarter
- Caroline Gastonguay netted her third goal to make it 6-1 with 8:34 to go in the first half, with Abigail Cawley and Caroline Bailey following up with goals to increase the margin to 8-1.
- The Lakers got one back, but Caroline Gastonguay’s fourth goal of the first half gave the Tars a 9-2 advantage going to the half.
Third Quarter
- Abigail Cawley scored the first goal of the second half to make it 10-2, but the Lakers wouldn’t allow Rollins to increase its lead any further.
- The two sides traded goals until it was 12-4, at which point Grand Valley State went on a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 13-9 after three quarters.
Fourth Quarter
- The Lakers found the net first in the fourth, trimming the lead to just three (13-10).
- Charlotte Gasonguay and Bailey got the next two goals, giving the Tars a bit of breathing room over the closing minutes.
- GVSU was able to get the final goal of the game at the 5:18 mark, but the Tars kept the visitors from threatening any further as they held on for the 15-11 win.
UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Young Harris, Georgia, to take on Shorter in a neutral-site contest on Thursday, March 2. The game is set for 2 p.m.
