Ave Maria: Sherman Named NAIA Second Team All-American

via press release – photo via Ave Maria web site   KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Ave Maria’s Katelyn Sherman was named a 2017 NAIA Women’s Lacrosse All-American Second Team honoree on Tuesday, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced. The teams were selected by the NAIA-Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association All-America Committee. Sherman, a sophomore from Melbourne, Fla., led the Lady Gyrenes with 41 goals on the season. She also tallied five assists for a team-high 46 points. Her 75 shots and 63 shots on goal were both team-highs. Sherman also gathered 26 ground balls, six draw controls, and nine caused turnovers, In April, Sherman was selected to the All-Independent Conference First Team. Last season, she received Second Team All-Independent Conference honors as well as Honorable Mention All-South Region recognition Kadijah Kalo of Lawrence Tech (Mich.) was named National Player of the Year, while head coach Mary Ann Meltzer was named NAIA National Coach of the Year. Twelve individuals are appearing on one of the All-America teams for a second-straight season, including Brooke Knoll of Davenport, Taylor Vacaaro of SCAD Savannah, Kalo, Avery Blackmon of Georgetown (Ky.) and Olivia Stahl of SCAD Savannah. The quintet are all repeat First Team award winners. Davenport, Lawrence Tech and SCAD Savannah – three of the four semifinal teams at this year’s National Invitational – led all teams with five players each on the squad.
