Chiles Quiets Maclay For The District 2 Title With an 11-7 Win

Following a narrow victory over their semi-final opponent, Chiles came out with something to prove. Could they beat their arch rival twice in one year and win their second District Championship since 2008?
The game started with Maclay striking first. At 10:21, Sam Chase (#2) sweeps from behind the goal and passes to Carson Rowe (#23) on the right wing for a goal. Chiles come back with its on play behind the goal, a pass from Logan Short (#3) to Luke Mizell (#24), who quick sticks it for a score. Game tied. Chiles wins the faceoff and holds the ball for a long stretch. At 6:35, Chiles’ attackman Matthew Congdon (#2) fires from the left wing for a goal. Chiles leads 2-1. On a failed Maclay clear, Trent Fewox (#21) finds Short (#3) for another goal at 3:41. Chiles up 3-1. At 1:33 left in the quarter, Stone Foster (#4) sweeps from behind the goal and side-arms it into the back of the net. Maclay down by 1. With twenty seconds left in the quarter, Chiles fires three shots on goal, but cannot connect. The quarter ends with Chiles up by one (3-2).
At the start of second quarter, Chiles strikes first. At 10:36, on a failed Maclay clear, Short (#3) recovers the groundball and fires from the right wing for a score. Chiles takes a two goal lead (4-2). At 5:42, the Congdon twins team up. Matt Congdon (#2) connects with brother Sean (#6) charging hard from the top of the box. Congdon blasts it by Yang, increasing the Chiles lead by three (5-2). With ten seconds left in the half, Chiles’ goalie, Carson Hough (#28), makes a spectacular stop on Maclay standout Sam Chase (#2). Chiles leads at half 5-2.
The third quarter opens with both teams battling hard. You can sense some urgency in Maclay. At 8:27, Sam Chase (#2) fires a side-arm shot to pull Maclay within two (5-3). On a fast break, Josh Sirdevan (#12) pushes up the right sideline, passes to Short (#3), who finds Matt Congdon (#2) sitting on the left crease for goal. Chiles’ stretches its lead back to three (6-3) at 3:54. Matthew Winegardner (#6) connects with Rowe (#23) for his second goal of the game at 1:55. Chiles wins the faceoff and methodically works the ball around. With 35 seconds left on the clock, Short (#3) passes to Mizell (#24) for a quick stick goal. Chiles leads 7-4. Chiles wins the faceoff again and marches down the field. With eight seconds left on the clock Trenton Fewox (#21) drives up the right side of the crease and passes to an open Mizell (#24) sitting at the top of the box. Mizell fires and scores to put Chiles up 8-4.
Four minutes into the fourth quarter, Chiles’ midfielder, Josh Sirdevan (#12), takes matters into his own hands. On a clear, he runs the entire length of the field, dodges two Maclay long poles, and fires for a goal. At 8:05 in the fourth quarter, Chiles is up by five goals.
Under seven minutes left in the game, Chiles attackman, Trent Fewox, loses the ball. Sam Chase (#2) does his own impression of Josh Sirdevan and runs the length of the field, firing at the top of the box for a goal. Maclay pulls within four (9-5). Fewox again turns the ball over, but this time Chase (#2) connects with Rowe (#23) for another Maclay goal. Winegardner (#6) scores shortly after making it a two-goal game (9-7).
At 3:09, Logan Short (#3) took control of the game. He swept around the left crease and fired past Peter Yang (#1). Chiles lead back to three (10-7). Fewox loses the ball again, but Maclay couldn’t capitalize. At 1:51, Short races up the left crease and arches it over Yang for his third goal of the game. The home crowd erupts and Chiles holds on for the win and a district championship.
Overall, Chiles held the ball well on offense, eating up huge chunks of time and minimizing turnovers. Chiles’ defense played outstanding and kept the trio of Chase, Winegardner, and Rowe at bay for most of the game. Chiles defensive standout, Quinn Lassiter, ate up ground balls and cleared the ball effectively well.
Chiles awaits the winner of the District 1 showdown between Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Catholic.
