Coach Mo Asif’s Blog: Starting Up Northside Christian School! – Part 3

Author’s Note:  Readers will remember that for the first two years of Doug Shanahan’s coaching reign at start-up St. Brendan’s we asked Doug to occasionally blog about the experience of developing a new high school program from scratch.  The series was well received and when FLN had a chance to replicate the series at another school we were happy to find Mo Asif, the new coach of the new NCS program in St. Petersburg, willing to do so!  Thanks to Coach Asif for taking this on and we hope the readers will find this a fun read and one that we all can learn from!     3/13/2018 The Northside Mustangs have been making huge strides in strengthening their skills over the last two weeks. After focusing on the basics of passing, catching, shooting, and ground balls the last week we have now devoted time in practices to increase the lacrosse IQ of the new players. We have also grown in size by adding three new players on the team. Even though adding players 3 weeks into the program bring its challenges, I am not one to turn away any player that is interested in learning the game. As far as our games go we have been staying competitive in most of the games we have played so far. We actually had our first victory last week, and if you would have seen the players after the game it would have seemed like we just won the state title. I was so proud of them, and they deserved reveling in that memory that they will remember for the rest of their lives. I had to remind them that 5 weeks ago 90% of the players had never held a stick in their hands let alone understood how the game is played! Even though we are making huge gains, I still realize we have a long season ahead of us and we are going to stick to our mission for this season; Play the next game better than the last! The parents have been so supportive of our team and have nothing but praise and encouraging words to say about all the players. We are truly blessed to have the support system we do with the parents, family, school and friends all coming out to cheer and support the Mustangs as we continue to grow on a daily basis.
