JU Men: Big Second Quarter Not Enough for Dolphins in 11-10 OT Loss to Vermont

via JU press release   SEVERN, Md. – Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse won the battle, but fell in overtime as the Dolphins outplayed No. 16 Vermont to an 11-10 overtime decision in favor of the Catamounts on a chilly, blustery Saturday afternoon at Archbishop Spalding High School. “Today was another heartbreaking loss for our group. While we had chances at the end to win it, our lack of attention to detail in the first half was the greatest cause for concern,” stated head coach John Galloway. “From picking up ground balls to making sure we are on time and attentive at meetings, to making our bed when we wake up in the morning, those are the differences.” Jacksonville (2-4) posted 10 more shots than Vermont (39-29) and held the advantage in ground balls (41-29) to control the game. Senior McLean Chicquen recorded a goal in the first, second, and fourth quarters, and added an assist in the second to lead the Dolphins, while junior goalkeeper Hunter Sells finished the day with 10 saves. Freshman Dixon Smith continued to create transition opportunities on the defensive end with five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Added Galloway, “Our defense played incredibly well over the period of the game, and I am proud of their discipline and execution on that end. We will get back to work Monday as we prepare for the next phase of the season, conference play. We are three goals away from being a top-10 team and our staff and players have every intention of proving that true in the next phase of the season.” Junior Will Hendrick opened up scoring for the Dolphins at the 5:51 mark in the first before the visiting Catamounts (6-0) answered back with a pair of their own for an early 3-1 lead. Senior Shawn Ewert found Chicquen with 1:31 remaining to bring Jacksonville back within one, 3-2, but a UVM goal with six seconds left in the quarter put Vermont ahead by two. Four of the next six goals belonged to the Dolphins as sophomore Dwayne Mattushik (14:55), Chicquen (9:36), Ewert (7:24), and redshirt-senior Mitchell Parker (5:30) found the back of the net to erase a three-goal deficit as Vermont held a 7-6 lead at halftime. Trading a pair of goals in the third, Jacksonville fought to tie the game on five separate occasions throughout. The last equalizer came in the fourth as back-to-back unassisted goals from senior Shawn Ewert (10:50) and Chicquen (7:11) deadlocked the game at 10-10. After winning the faceoff to start the overtime period, Vermont stole the game just 25 seconds into the extra period on a shot from Tewaaraton Award Watch List nominee Ian MacKay. Senior faceoff man Hunter Forbes went 15-of-24 at the X and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls. Ewert (2g) and Parker (2g, 1a) finished the day with a pair of goals, while Forbes, Hendrick, and Mattushik added one apiece. Vermont was led by MacKay’s five-point performance (4g, 1a), while goalie Nick Washuta posted 11 saves. The Dolphins open SoCon action Saturday, March 17 when they play host to Mercer at 1 p.m.
