JU Men: OT Game-Winner Sends MLAX To First-Ever SoCon Title Game!

via JU press release   RICHMOND, Va. – A dramatic second-half comeback, an overtime curse broken, and the game-winning goal scored by the hometown kid. What sounds like a movie plot played out in the Southern Conference semifinal Thursday evening as the #3 seeded Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse team rallied from six goals down to send the game into overtime, where the Dolphins saw the game-winner come off the stick of junior midfielder and Richmond, Va. native Evan Tyler just 1:22 into the extra period to lift Jacksonville over #2 High Point, 12-11, at Richmond’s Robins Stadium. “Tonight was one of the best lacrosse moments I have ever been a part of as a player or coach. When we were down 10-4 in the third quarter, it could have been easy for us to give up. Our team just got to work,” commented head coach John Galloway following the victory. Facing a 10-4 deficit and held scoreless until the 3:49 mark in the third quarter, the Dolphins rattled off three straight as senior McLean Chicquensandwiched a pair of goals around a tally from freshman Jeremy Winston to bring the Dolphins within three, 10-7, heading into the final 15 minutes. Tyler opened the fourth with an unassisted goal at the 11:57 mark as he cut toward the goal and finished a shot as he fell in front of the crease. High Point answered back a little over two minutes later, and it was Chicquen and Winston who dished and found each other on back-to-back goals. Winston dished to Chicquen on the extra-man opportunity at 6:39, and Chicquen returned the favor with a precision pass as Winston finished through traffic from five yards out at 3:33 to bring the Dolphins within one, 11-10. Chiquen capped his seven-point day with the game-tying goal with 2:02 showing on the clock. The Victoria, British Columbia native finished the day with five goals and two assists. Jacksonville peppered High Point goalie Tim Troutner Jr. with a pair of shots with 13 and 2 seconds remaining in regulation, but Troutner found an answer both times. “McLean Chicquen put the team on his back and the rest of the guys just fell in line right away. I’m so proud of the defense for putting the first half behind them and holding a powerful offense to two goals in the second half,” added Galloway. Forbes won the opening face off in overtime and the Dolphins called a timeout to set up the ensuing play. Chicquen drew three defenders toward the middle of the field and dished to Tyler, who was waiting in the left alley and finished high-to-low for the game-winner with 3:43 on the clock. “That is who this team is, and I am excited we get more days together. We will get to work tonight to prepare to win a championship.” High Point recorded the first two and last two goals of the opening quarter, while junior Eric Applegate (6:49), sophomore Dwayne Mattushik (5:22), and Tyler (4:17) rung up a trio of goals in between. With 10:23 showing in the second, Chicquen tied the game up at four apiece. High Point then used a 6-0 run spanning the final 6:43 of the second quarter and ending at the 14:50 mark in the third for its all-too-slim 10-4 lead early in the second half. Winston finished the day with four points behind a pair of goals and a pair of assists, while Tyler matched his single-game high with three goals. Despite a 5-3 disadvantage in the first quarter, Forbes closed out the game 17-of-26 on face offs and picked up 10 ground balls. Junior goalie Hunter Sells recorded nine saves, including four in the third quarter, to pick up the win. Connor Robinson led the Panthers with five points behind a team-high four goals and five ground balls. Troutner recorded a SoCon Championship record 22 saves in the loss. The Dolphins return to Robins Stadium this Saturday, May 5 when they take on #1 Richmond for the SoCon title at 2 p.m.
