via JU press release   SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After helping the Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse to a 1-1 week with a victory against Detroit Mercy and nearly upsetting No. 4 Ohio State, the freshman duo of Jeremy Winston and Dixon Smith swept the Southern Conference weekly awards by being named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league Tuesday afternoon. Both natives of Dallas, Texas, the duo propelled the Dolphins to an impressive week. Winston posted a hat trick in Jacksonville’s 15-8 win over Detroit Mercy last Tuesday (Feb. 20), before leading the Dolphins with a five-goal performance against No. 4 Ohio State in the Moe’s Lacrosse Classic last Sunday (Feb. 25). His five goals against the Buckeyes mark the highest goal total by a Dolphin against any ranked opponent in program history. A lockdown defensive effort from Smith held the Buckeyes’ All-American attackman Tre Leclaire scoreless through 59 minutes last Sunday. Smith picked up four ground balls and caused four crucial turnovers as the Dolphins nearly took down the Buckeyes in a 12-11 decision in overtime. Smith also caused a turnover in Jacksonville’s 15-8 victory earlier in the week against the Titans. Winston, Smith and the rest of the Dolphins return to action later this week as Jacksonville heads to Severn, Md. this Saturday, March 3 to take on No. 16 Vermont at Archbishop Spalding High School at noon.
