JU Women: Dolphins Roll to 21-12 Victory in ASUN Opener

via JU press release   NORFOLK, Va. – Thriving on the road, Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse picked up its third straight win and sixth victory in the past seven games as the Dolphins rolled to a 21-12 conquest at Old Dominion to open ASUN Conference play, Friday afternoon at L.R. Hill Sports Complex. “Our attack really dialed in well in the first 20 minutes of the game, building 17 goals and getting a running clock early in the second half,” stated Associate Head Coach Paul McCord. “Old Dominion took advantage of a lull in our play and fought back. I was glad to see some of our young kids step up and close the game with a good run as well.” Senior Ashtyn Hiron and freshman Sarah Elms combined for 12 of the Dolphins’ 21 goals, as the duo matched their career highs in points. Hiron posted eight points (6 goals, 2 assists) for the third time in the last four games, while Elms totaled six points (6g) for the third time this season. Hiron has totaled 30 points in the past four games and leads the ASUN with 50 points on the year. All six of Elms’ tallies came in the first half, as the Severna Park, Md. native notched the first two Dolphin goals of the game at 28:19 and 25:39, but the hosts took a 3-2 lead early on. Jacksonville then went on a 12-2 run, including a 4-0 run where Hiron and Elms traded goals and back-to-back tallies from Elms at 10:03 and 8:41 before the Monarch’s closed the period with a goal to make it 14-6 at halftime. Junior Lillie Miller connected with Hiron less than 30 seconds into the second half at the 29:37 mark, and classmate Erin McGuire dished to freshman Alyssa Arnold on back-to-back goals (25:05, 21:59) to extend the Dolphins’ lead to 17-7. Jacksonville used the running clock to its advantage for nearly eight minutes before the Monarchs found an answer – or five of them – to cut into the Dolphins’ lead, 17-12, with 7:34 to go. “ODU is getting better each game; they had a tie with a top-25 team in the second half and they are a better team than they were in early March. They fought hard all game,” added McCord. However, the Dolphins finished the game on a 4-0 run as McGuire (5:59), Hiron (3:33), and sophomores Olivia Alvarez (2:59) and Parker Day (1:43) notched the final tallies of the day to lift Jacksonville to its third straight win, 21-12. Hiron totaled five draw controls, while freshman Megan Prescott (4 DC) and sophomore Kasey Stevens (3 DC) combined for seven. McGuire (1g, 2a) and Alvarez (2g, 1a) finished the day with a trio of points each, while Miller (1g, 1a) and Day (1g) added a pair of goals. Graduate goalkeeper Emily Poelma posted four saves in each half and picked up the win between the pipes (5-3). Glory Johnson’s seven-point day (5g, 2a) led the way for the Monarchs, while Katie Miller won 10 draw controls. Goalie Lauren Ey recorded six saves on 21 shots in the loss. The Dolphins hit the road to Conway, S.C. for a meeting with Coastal Carolina this Sunday, April 8 at 1 p.m.
