JU Women: Underclassmen Shine In 19-5 Spring Break Victory Over Central Connecticut State

via JU press release   JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Underclassmen led the way to an impressive victory Wednesday afternoon as Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse defeated Central Connecticut State, 19-5, at D.B. Milne Field. The freshmen trio of Sarah ElmsJenny Kinsey, and Alyssa Arnold combined for eight of the Dolphins’ 19 goals, as Elms had a career day with six points (4g, 2a). Kinsey and Arnold both posted a pair of goals and an assist in the effort. “I was really impressed with the freshmen who stepped up. They really went in, took care of their minutes, competed, and followed the game plan,” stated Head Coach Mindy McCord. “Not all of them have had a lot of playing time this year, so I’m really proud of them for going out and did something really good in production.” The Dolphins (5-2) were strong on the ride, causing 15 of the Blue Devils’ 20 turnovers and allowing the visitors to complete just 13 of 23 clear attempts. Jacksonville also outshot CCSU, 35-12, and held a 20-6 advantage on draw controls. Added McCord, “Our draws were pretty dominant today and that was a big possession grabber for us, and our ride because they struggled under pressure. What was probably most impressive was our second half; we made the adjustment to push the transition and not play settled, and that’s really when it made a big difference.” Though Central Connecticut State (1-6) opened scoring at the 25:32 mark, Jacksonville immediately answered back with five straight, including a pair of tallies from reigning ASUN Conference Offensive Player of the Week, junior Lillie Miller. Jacksonville held the Blue Devils to just one more goal in the opening 30 minutes, and closed the half on a 3-0 run on goals from junior Genie Santarpio (11:13), Elms (6:59), and Miller (1:29) to boost the Dolphins’ lead to 8-2 at halftime. Coming out of the break, Jacksonville never let off the gas and notched eight goals to push their advantage to 16-2 with 15:59 to go. Kinsey, Elms, Santarpio, and Arnold all recorded a pair of goals during that run, while sophomore Chloe Harris dished assists on both of Santarpio’s marks. Despite the Blue Devils finding three of the next four goals, Jacksonville closed out the game with a pair of goals of their own, including Santarpio’s fourth of the day (2:03) and Elms handing out an assist to junior Kasey Stevens with 42 seconds left. Junior goalie Kristen Brunoforte picked up a save to improve to 3-1 in the cage, while classmate Noelle Parker closed out the game in net for the Dolphins. “Kudos to our goalies to stepping in to some tough situations. I’m really proud of their commitment and eagerness to help the team,” added McCord. Carson Adelberger, Morgan Sinton, and Molly Coogan all posted a pair of goals for Central Connecticut State, while goalies Jackie Branthover, Meaghan Allard, and Cooper Cowdin combined for 11 saves. The Dolphins return to action next Wednesday, March 21 when they play host to Dartmouth at 4 p.m.
