Tars Win Fourth Straight Thanks to Five Goals by Cinque
WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 26, 2018) – Rollins freshman attackman Joey Cinque notched a game high five goals and added one assist for a six point performance en route to a 16-10 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Monday night at Cahall-Sandspur Field. The win marks the fourth straight for the Rollins men’s lacrosse team, and advances their record to 4-3 on the season, while the Chargers drop to 6-4 overall. Cinque’s six-point performance and five goal outing mark season bests for the West Palm Beach, Fla. native. Greg Taichermatched Cinque in total points, scoring four goals and adding two assists, while Jeremy Slocumb tallied a hat trick on the evening. Tomy Keane and Grant Long earned two points apiece, each netting one goal and one assist. Kyle Portera and Roy Hansen scored one goal apiece, while Blake Buell and Jackson Colling earned one assist each. Connor Ashton led the team in assists with three, marking a game high. In total, 10 of the Tars’ 16 goals were assisted on the night. Leading the team in ground balls with seven was Lucas Brush, while Kyle Sudol picked up four as he won 13-of-17 faceoff attempts. Ford Johnson also had a solid night at the faceoff-x, winning 6-of-8 attempts. Matching Kyle Sudol in ground balls was Austin Jackson with four, while Evan Schimek led the team in caused turnovers with two. In goal, Andrew Hoemann faced a total of 28 shots, 16 of which were on target. The Bellingham, Washington native earned six saves on the night while allowing 10 goals. The Chargers were led by Emory Weaver, who scored four goals, followed by Luke LeVette, who netted three. Nicholas Ranta and Kevin Coppinger notched a goal and assist apiece, for two points each on the night. James cox scored a goal of his own, while Jacob Glen and Caleb Merrow each dished out one assist. Kyle Siersma, Nik Kubik, and Colton Nall led the team with three ground balls each, with Kubik winning 10-of-29 faceoff attempts. The Chargers earned two caused turnovers on the night as a team, with Weaver and John Forrest Ruble credited for one each. In goal, Siersma played a full game between the pipes, facing 37 shots and 23 shots on goal. Siersma earned seven saves, including three in the second quarter to hold the Tars to just one goal throughout the second stanza, and allowed 16 goals. HOW IT HAPPENED:- First Quarter: The Tars were hot from the start, scoring five unanswered goals in the first quarter to take a 5-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of action. Cinque netted the first two, followed by two by Taicher, and a third by Cinque to give Rollins a five goal lead entering into the second stanza.
- Second Quarter: The Chargers finally hit their stride, scoring with 13:29 on the clock thanks to an unassisted goal by Coppinger. Grant Long tallied an unassisted goal of his own to give the Tars 6-1 lead with 10:33 on the clock, but a goal by LeVette 29 seconds later pulled UAH back to within four, 6-2. LeVette’s goal sparked a five goal run by the Chargers to close out the second period as Weaver added three consecutive goals, followed by one last goal by LeVette to close out the quarter with the score tied at 6-6.
- Third Quarter: Alabama-Huntsville opened up the third quarter with one more goal, capping off a six-goal streak to give the Chargers their first lead of the game, 7-6, with 12:42 on the clock. The Tars were finally able to halt the run at the 8:27 mark with a man-up goal by Slocumb off of an assist by Taicher, which ignited a five-goal run to close out the quarter with Rollins holding onto an 11-7 lead.
- Fourth Quarter: The Tars carried their momentum into the final quarter, scoring four more to complete a nine goal scoring streak which put the Tars in an eight goal lead, 15-7, with 2:53 to play. The Chargers broke the run with an unassisted goal by Weaver with 2:10 on the clock, but a man-up goal by Kyle Portera pulled the Tars back into an eight goal advantage, 16-8, with 1:41 to go. The Chargers fought until the very end scoring two late goals with 43 and 20 ticks left on the clock, but the Tars were able to secure the 16-10 victory and claim their fourth straight win.
- The Tars received votes on the USILA Division II Coaches Poll this week, and moved into 17th on the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Men’s Top 20 this week, earning the No. 20 slot.
- The Chargers also received votes on the USILA DII Coaches Poll, but did not appear on the NIKE/USL Top 20 at all.
- Ashton matched a career best in assists in a game, which he first set on April 8, 2017 against Lynn.
- Cinque notched a new season best for goals and points in a game, tallying five goals and adding an assist for six points overall.
- Roy Hansen notched the second goal of his career, the first occurring on April 15, 2017 against Florida Southern.
- Austin Jackson matched a career best in ground balls with four
- Slocumb matched a career best for goals in a game with three, and earned a new career best for ground balls in a game with three
- Wyatt Todd matched a career best for ground balls in a game with two, which he first set on March 13, 2018 against Colorado Mesa.
- Rollins now leads the all-time series with the Chargers, 1-0
- Freshman Kyle Sudol currently sits first in program record books for Faceoff Win Percentage. Sudol has won 73-of-121 attempts, and currently holds onto a win percentage of .603.
- With 80 overall points, Greg Taicher sits tied for fifth in program record books for points in a career, and is tied with Austin Ricci `13. Taicher also has climbed into fifth overall in career goals (56) and has moved into sixth in career assists (24), tied with Adam Stefanowicz `16.
- Jeremy Slocumb has moved into the program record books for career assists, having earned 13 to place him in a tie for 17th.
- Connor Ashton currently sits 15th in program record books for career points (47), 15th for career goals (26), and has moved into a tie for ninth for career assists (21), tied with AJ Gogan `16.
- Lucas Brush has earned 128 ground balls, and sits fifth in program record books for ground balls in a career. The Dublin, Ohio native is also currently fifth in program record books for career caused turnovers with 50. He currently sits 27 CT’s behind program leader Nick Scannapieco (2010-13) who amassed 77 in his career.
