Short Scores 6 as Lawton Chiles Beats Maclay 13-10 in a Thrilling District 2 Battle

from FLN Correspondent Tom Congdon   Monday, March 26, 2018 – Tallahassee On a brisk Monday evening, Chiles (Timberwolves) prepared to play Maclay (Marauders) for a second time this season.  Coming off a win against district foe, the Lincoln Trojans, Chiles felt confident that they had finally figured out how to put points on the board.  The question again remained whether their defense could hold Maclay and the duo of Sam Chase (#2) and Matthew Winegardner (#6).  These two combined for 6 goals in a 9-5 win against Chiles on March 8. Unlike their previous game, where both team didn’t score a single goal in the first quarter, Maclay decided to push the pace early.  Taking advantage of an unforced error on a Chiles clear, Carson Rowe (#23) found Sam Chase (#2) streaking toward the goal. Chase takes the pass and makes a spectacular behind-the-back goal. Maclay strikes first at 10:04 (1-0). Chiles wins the faceoff.  Chiles leading scorer, Logan Short (#3) takes it behind the goal and passes to Trent Fewox (#21) in the wing, who the quickly passes it back to Short running up along the crease.  Short scores to tie the game at 9:34. Maclay wins the next faceoff and settles in.  A pass from Matthew Winegardner (#6) at the top of the box to an open Everett Thompson (#14) results in another score for Maclay at 6:47.     At 6:24, Trent Fewox (#21) and Logan Short (#3) team up again.  A sharp pass from Short from behind the goal to an awaiting Fewox in the wing results in a blast to the back of the net. Game tied 2-2. The home crowd is ecstatic.  The game is shaping up to be a good one, but can Chiles keep matching Maclay goal-for-goal? Maclay wins the faceoff and again settles in.  They work the ball around.  The ball makes its way to Sam Chase in the wing who works his way near to the middle of the box.  As the defense closes in on him he passes to an open Stone Foster (#2) who shoots and scores at 5:08.  Maclay takes the lead again 3-2. Chiles wins the next faceoff. Midfielder Josh Sirdevan (#12) dodges down the middle then passes to attackman Matt Congdon (#2) in the wing.  As Sirvedan keeps moving toward the goal, Congdon fires it back to Sirdevan who shoots over an awaiting d-pole for a score.  We’re tied again at 3-3 (4:31). Maclay wins the faceoff. Chase (#2) takes matters into his own hands and charges to the net. Carson Hough (#28) makes a great save.  At 2:48, Chiles regains possession.  Matt Congdon (#2) again finds Josh Sirdevan (#12) crashing to the net, who scores on a wicked side-arm shot. Chiles leads the game for the first time.  The crowd is jubilant.     Towards the end of the quarter facing a barrage of shots from Maclay, Goaltender Carson Hough (#28) makes an outstanding save on Matthew Winegardner (#6) in front of the cage.  The first quarter ends with Chiles up by one (4-3). At 10:17, Stone Foster (#4) finds a diving Sam Chase (#2) in front of the net for a Maclay goal.  Game tied 4-4.  After wining the faceoff, from behind the goal, Logan Short (#3) accelerates to the goal and makes a left-handed shot over an out-stretched goaltender Peter Yang (#1) for Chiles next score (6:47).  Chiles regains the lead 5-4. Maclay strikes at 7:17. Matthew Winegardner (#6) dodges left of the Chiles defender and shoots past a defenseless goaltender Carson Hough.  Tied at 5-5. Minutes later, Chase dodges past Joel Davidson (#20) in the low wing and dashes to the goal. As Chiles defensemen Cole Ault (#13) and Jake Wierenga (#23) slide to cover, Chase finds an open Carson Rowe (#23) for a quick stick score. Maclay regains the lead 6-5 at 2:45. With 26 seconds left in the half, Liam McAbee (#24) works the ball behind the net and finds Sam Chase (#2) in the wing, who shoots and scores on a blast. The first two-goal lead of night (8-6) The 3rd quarter opens with a Maclay score.  At the top of the box, Everett Thompson (#14) finds Sam Chase (#2) in the wing, who fires a bullet over Goalie Hough’s left shoulder (11:35).  Maclay now leads by three (8-5). Chiles answers with a great pass from Josh Sirdevan (#12) from behind goal to Logan Short (#3) at the top of the crease for a score (11:11). Chiles down by two (8-6).     The game turns into a defensive battle. A nice check by Chiles defender Jack Hennessey (#1) jars the ball loose from Chase.  Chiles clears the ball up field. Josh Sirdevan (#12) takes the ball behind goal and connects again with Logan Short (#3) in front of the net (7:34).  Chiles pulls within one (8-7). Possession changes, but Logan Short (#3) recovers a ground ball at midfield.  He presses the wing and works his way to the goal.  Passing one defender, Maclay tries to cover, but the defensive slide comes late.  Short fires and scores.  WE ARE TIED at 5:03. Late in the 3rd quarter, LSM Quinn Lassiter (#10) charges the goal and fires. The shot is blocked, but goaltender Peter Yang (#1) scrambles to recover the ground ball which is well outside the goal. As he stumbles, Short for Chiles recovers the ball and spots Matt Congdon (#2) standing alone in front of an empty goal.  He fires to Congdon who shoots and scores.  Chiles regains the lead at 3:05 (9-8). With less than a minute remaining in the 3rd quarter, Maclay works the ball around.  At the top of the box, Everett Thompson (#14) passes to Sam Chase (#2) in the wing.  Chase backs his way into two awaiting d-poles (Jake Wierenga and and Quinn Lassiter).  A second later he bounces off of them and fires a shot toward goal. It passes over Goalie Hough’s right hip for a goal. LSM Lassiter slumps his shoulders in disbelief.  We’re tied again (9-9). As the fourth quarter starts, the game intensifies.  Both teams mount charges.  Again double-teamed, Sam Chase (#2) works the ball from behind goal.  He breaks through and charges up and around the right side of the crease.  Both goalie (Carson Hough) and defenseman Nick McWey (#25) charge forward, leaving Everett Thompson (#14) alone on the other side of the crease. Chase passes and Thompson quick sticks for a goal.  Maclay leads 10-9 (8:13).     Chiles wins the faceoff.  Quinn Lassiter (#10) charges the goal and shoots wide.  Chiles retains possession. Working the ball around, Matt Congdon (#2) finds Logan Short (#3) at the top of the box. Short fires and connects for a goal (8:27).  Game tied 10-10. At the 8-minute mark, Chiles mounts a furious charge.  Two shots on goal just miss.  Then it happened.  From behind goal, Trent Fewox (#21) dodges up along the right crease. As the Maclay defenseman slides to cover, Fewox spots Sean Congdon (#6) dashing to the goal. PASS, SHOT, GOAL!  The crowd erupts. Chiles takes the lead (11-10) at 7:40. Maclay does not go down quietly.  They mount a charge, shooting three times on goal.  All wide. Teams exchange possession. Can Chiles hold on?
