MELBOURNE, Fla. – Sunshine State Conference women’s lacrosse coaches vote Florida Southern College as the league’s top team heading into the 2021 season. With 33 points and three first-place votes in the poll, the Moccasins are expected to repeat as regular-season champions for the sixth year in a row.
The University of Tampa missed the top spot in the ranking by the narrowest of margins. The Spartans gathered 32 points and matched FSC with three first-place nods. Rollins College holds third place in the ranking with 28 points and the final first-place vote. Saint Leo University sits squarely in fourth following 20 points, while Florida Tech is fifth with 15 points. Lynn University and Palm Beach Atlantic University round out this year’s poll tied for sixth with nine points each.
Record Book: “SSC Women’s Lacrosse Records: 2015 – 2020”
SSC teams played between seven and nine games in 2020 before the season halted on March 13th due to the widespread Coronavirus. Rollins and Tampa finished the shortened season tied with a league-best 6-1 overall record (.857), followed by Florida Tech at 6-2 (.750), and then Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 5-2 (.714). Every league team had a winning record when the season came to a halt. Collectively, SSC teams sported a 40-16 record (.714) against non-conference opponents last season.
Florida Southern, Rollins, and Tampa all finished 2019 with a 5-1 league record and a share of the SSC regular-season championship. Tampa went on to win the 2019 SSC tournament, a first in program history, besting Rollins in the semifinals and FSC in the championship final. All three teams earned a bid to the NCAA tournament, where Tampa fell to Queens University, and Rollins defeated FSC in the first round. The Tars season came to an end in the national semifinals following an overtime loss to Queens.
