Girls 2A is getting more interesting, as teams are moving around the state and taking on a lot of tough games. Once in a while, that comes back to bite you, as St. Thomas found out yesterday, with a tough loss to Bartram Trail in Jacksonville, which followed a one-goal loss at Ponte Vedra.
Steinbrenner played a tighter game with Lake Mary than I expected, but did come through with the win. Vero keeps rolling along, while Newsome’s junior class is making up for the continued absence of Samantha Swanovich, and that region can get very interesting as the season progresses. Manatee has put together back-to-back big games and a few others in that region are also showing well. Sickles has struggled, while Riverview and Gulf Coast are playing well. Riverview’s early season win over Manatee should be a big one for bracket seeding or at-large consideration.
Jupiter and Boca Raton are still winning, but Vero took it to Jupiter this past week. Boca’s schedule is pretty soft until the last two games in April, so there’s a ceiling in where they can be ranked.
Plant already has a nice road win over Riverside and has a nice out-of-state game coming up to benchmark against. Hagerty has turned things around and still has plenty of tough matchups down the line. Lake Mary is showing improvement, but at 2-4, I can’t rank them yet. Oviedo’s bad loss to Bishop Moore means I need to see more. Lake Brantley’s early season win over Lake Mary might make the difference in an at-large bid should they need one, and they have a better second-half schedule to make noise with.
