#14 Mocs Celebrate Senior Day with Dominant Victory

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern men’s lacrosse team celebrated 17 seniors Saturday afternoon following the Moccasins dominant victory over Palm Beach Atlantic, 20-8. The victory gave FSC 11 wins in 2022 tying the program record for wins in a single season. It also marked the fifth Sunshine State Conference victory of the year which set a new program record for SSC wins in a season. The 20 goals also marked the first time FSC has scored 20-or-more goals in a game five times in one season.
 
The Mocs improved to 11-5 on the season and 5-2 in SSC play while the Sailfish fell to 5-9 overall and 1-6 in league action.
 
The Mocs had several strong performances on the field Saturday as senior Sean Nolan led the way with eight points off of four goals and four assists. The hat trick notched his ninth of the season putting him just one away from tying the single season record at FSC. Senior Jeff Atlas chipped in four goals of his own to bring his season total for points to 88, just 12 away from a 100-point season with postseason games still left on the schedule. Freshman Matt Flammenspeck joined in on the fun with four goals of his own. All three Mocs each picked up two ground balls in the victory.
 
Senior Edward May and junior Jay Minor each chipped in a hat trick with three goals each. May added an assist for a four-point effort. Senior Andrew Medeiros handed out a career-high three assists in the contest as well.
 
Sophomore Nick Shannon had a tremendous day on defense as he earned six caused turnovers and six ground balls. Senior Kevin Horwitz picked up a game-high 10 ground balls while winning 14 of his 22 faceoffs.
 
Senior Maxwell Freestone picked up the win in net as he made 11 saves in the victory while allowing seven goals He improved to 9-4 on the season in goal after seeing nearly 56 minutes of action Saturday.
 
Henry Sloyan led the Sailfish with four goals in the loss.

The Mocs got on the board quickly as Nolan scored the opening three goals of the contest within the first three minutes of action. After a pair of PBA goals cut the deficit to just one, FSC went on to score six-straight to open up a 9-2 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Atlas scored two of the six goals while the other four came from Nolan, May, Flammenspeck and Minor.
 
PBA would score a goal late in the second quarter and then opened the second half with a goal to cut the lead to 9-4. FSC would then out-score the Sailfish 8-1 over the next 15 minutes to open up a 17-5 advantage. The Mocs and Sailfish traded goals down the stretch for an eventual final of 20-8.
 
With the victory and Rollins win over Florida Tech Saturday afternoon, the second, third and fourth seeds for the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Championship came down to goals against average. Rollins won the tie break with a 11.857 GAA to earn the No. 2 seed. Florida Southern came in second in the tie break with a 12.286 GAA to take the No. 3 seed while Florida Tech finished in third in the tie break with a 13.00 GAA to take the final spot and the No. 4 seed. The Mocs will now travel to Rollins College Thursday, April 28 for the semifinals of the SSC Championship with a chance to play the winner of No. 1 Tampa and No. 4 Florida Tech for the conference championship on Sunday, May 1.

Men’s Lacrosse Concludes Season At #14 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla- The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s lacrosse team fell to #14 Florida Southern 20-8 Saturday. PBA wrapped up its season with a 5-9 record.

Henry Sloyan led the ‘Fish with four goals while Caleb Southard distributed three assists. The Mocs picked up 12 more groundballs than the Sailfish. Additionally, the Mocs went 16/30 at faceoffs and committed six fewer turnovers than PBA. 

The Sailfish were down 3-0 before Sloyan ended the scoring drought with 4:46 left in the first quarter. The ‘Fish capitalized off a man-up opportunity when Southard connected with Sloyan by the net. Almost a minute and a half later PBA cut the deficit to 3-2 when Dylan Insolia buried his first goal of the game. The Mocs went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-2 lead. The Sailfish capitalized off a Mocs penalty with 5:32 left in the first half when Southard found Insolia. Insolia ripped a shot for PBA’s third goal. Insolia finished the season with 11 goals. Southard finished his freshman campaign as the team leader in assists with 12. PBA trailed 9-3 at halftime. 

12 seconds into the second half Sloyan earned his second of the game. The Mocs answered back with a 4-0 run of their own to take a 13-4 lead. With ten minutes left in the third quarter, defensive midfielder Jake Bacilek notched his first goal of the year. The Mocs led 16-5 after the third quarter. Sloyan completed the hat-trick with 10:49 left in the game. 

Ben Justice scored his 17th goal of the season with 6:16 in the fourth quarter. At 3:54 Sloyan ripped his fourth goal of the game. Sloyan completed the season as the team leader in goals with 31 and points with 41. Ben Lightsey started in net and made eight saves. 

The Sailfish (5-9) concluded their season. The Sailfish made a four-win improvement from last season under interim head coach Jesse Vanatta. They’ll lose seven seniors this year including Austin EvansBen Justice, and Gunner Gebelein this offseason. This season Evans put up 20 goals with seven assists and Justice pumped in 17 goals with five assists. Gebelein led the Sunshine State Conference in caused turnovers this season with 3.07 caused turnovers per game. Additionally, Gebelein led the ‘Fish defensively with 43 caused turnovers and 66 groundballs this season.
