Men’s Lacrosse Edged by Lynn, 11-10

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – The Embry-Riddle men’s lacrosse team came tantalizingly close to its first-ever Sunshine State Conference win on Wednesday night at the ERAU Lacrosse field, but Lynn scored the final goal of a back-and-forth affair to come away with the 11-10 victory. The Eagles (3-10, 0-3 SSC) mounted a fourth-quarter comeback highlighted to tie the contest twice in the final minutes, but the Fighting Knights (3-8, 1-2 SSC) got the game-winner with two-and-a-half minutes to play.

Lynn struck for the game’s first score just 10 seconds into the contest after a little more than an hour delay due to weather in the area. But after the initial goal, both defenses settled in and neither team scored until Christian Hofer scored his 22nd goal of the year with under six minutes to play.

Marcus Needham found Pete Abbes for the Eagles’ second goal, giving the home team a 2-1 lead, but Lynn found the back of the net twice to retake a one-goal lead. After Lynn’s go-ahead goal, Mark Urso, who was dominant for the Eagles at the face off, won the ensuing face off, weaving through the Lynn defense and firing a shot past the Knights’ keeper to tie things up at 3-3.

ERAU and Lynn traded the next four goals in the second quarter, all in the first three minutes of play, but it was the visitors who took a 6-5 lead into halftime with the final score of the period at the 4:03 mark. LU’s goalkeeper made several nice saves in the final few minutes of the half to keep his team in front.

Lynn pushed its lead out to 8-5 when it scored two goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter, but the momentum switched when Coleman Jacobs fed Trent McCauley for his first goal of the season at the 5:01 mark of the period, cutting the Eagle deficit to 8-6. Needham scored less than 50 seconds later to make it a one-goal game, however, Lynn would scored the final goal of the period for the second straight quarter to own a 9-7 advantage after 45 minutes.

Lars Hoeg used his 6-6 frame to halve the Lynn lead three minutes into the fourth, and less than two minutes later Joe Anderson buried his 10th goal of the year to tie the game at 9-9.

Embry-Riddle had five shots over the next few minutes to take its first lead since the first quarter, but the Blue and Gold couldn’t find the back of the net, and it was the visitors that went back in front with a score at 6:58.

With time running down, Jacobs picked up a ground ball and was able to find Hofer with 3:17 to play in regulation, leading to Hofer’s second goal of the day and ERAU’s 10th, tying the game at 10-10.

Lynn won the next face off and was able to once again get the go-ahead goal, this time with just 2:39 left to play, but the Eagles got two good looks from Jacobs and Abbes around the 60-second mark that would have tied the game, but one shot was wide and the other was saved.

Abbes and Hofer each scored twice, while Jacobs finished with one goal and two assists, as did Needham. Lucas Fraser (3-10) made 10 saves in goal for ERAU.

Embry-Riddle will host Saint Leo on Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
