Webber: #10 Men’s Lacrosse Defeats SCAD in Conference-Opener

SAVANNAH, Ga. (February 4, 2023) – The Webber International University men’s lacrosse team opened conference play on Saturday afternoon as it battled the Bees of SCAD-Savannah. The Warriors conceded the fewest goals in a single game in its short history in a 14-4 victory on the road.

Webber (2-0 overall, 1-0 AAC) dominated offensively as it rattled off 41 shots in total, compared to the 16 of SCAD (0-1, 0-1). The Warriors made the most of their extra-man opportunities, scoring on four out of nine total chances.

Webber drew first blood inside the opening minute on a solo-goal by Cade McCarron. The Bees then equalized less than a minute later, but it was all Warriors for the remainder of the quarter. A man-up goal from Chase Jackson on the assist by Christian Tapia regained the lead for Webber. Two goals by freshman Jeremiah Loo and another man-up goal, this time by Tapia, gave the Warriors a 5-1 lead heading into quarter number two.

McCarron would find the back of the net yet again with five minutes left in the half. Nick Sheaffer scored his first of the game and fourth of the season on an assist by Jackson, handing the Warriors a 7-2 lead at halftime.

SCAD scored the first goal of the third quarter, cutting the deficit to four at 7-3. Houston Finlayson then scored an unassisted goal roughly five minutes later followed by another man-up goal from Tapia, his second of the game. Webber put the game to bed in the fourth quarter as they found the back of the net five more times, including two more from McCarron to complete his hat-trick.

Jackson tallied a team-high six points in total that included two goals and four assists on the day. He was followed by Loo and McCarron who finished with five points each. Loo ended with two goals and three assists while McCarron recorded a career-high four goals and one assist. Tapia had two goals and an assist and Sheaffer netted twice. Finlayson and Connor Herring each found the back of the net once as well.

Hunter Scott handled face-off duty in this one as he won 14 of his 22 total attempts from the spot. He also led the team in ground balls with four, followed by Dane FasanoJack Ostrander, and Cameron Paleski all with three apiece. Paleski also led the team in caused turnovers with four.

The Warriors will now take on Florida Gulf Coast University in an exhibition matchup next Saturday, February 11th at 1 p.m. before hosting Montreat College for their home-opener the following Saturday, February 18th at 12 p.m.
