AVE MARIA, Fla. – – The Ave Maria Lacrosse team lost their second game 22-1 in their home opener at North Park this afternoon. The Lady Gyrenes are currently 0-2 overall; 0-1 in NWLL play. AMU will host Reinhardt University next Wednesday, March 4th at 6 p.m.
The first draw went to Lydia Buckley and AMU was able to control the pace of the attack in the early minutes. Tough transition defense from AMU’s attack led Davenport’s goalie to turn over the ball and cause two turnovers in the first two minutes of the game.
Davenport got an early 9-0 lead on AMU which led to a midfield change up with twelve minutes left to go in the half. Adding fresh legs into the transition game seems to work as AMU kept Davenport from scoring for close to seven minutes.
AMU trailed by 13 goals going into half time.
Transition attack and inexperience proved to be a concern for the Lady Gyrenes as only took two shots in the second half. Kaylin Mayeski scored the first goal in the history of the program with 11 minutes remaining in the game.
“Regardless of the score, I feel like we made leap and bounds since our first game on Saturday. Our transition looked better and we were a lot more aggressive on the draw which is huge for us. Davenport was able to sub in and out their attack, and defensive lines constantly and their fresh legs just wore us down,” said coach Kelly Buikus.
Lydia Buckley had a strong game on the circle, with 11 draw controls. Abby Castro contributed four ground balls.
Hannah Camerota had nine saves on the afternoon while she was successful on 7/12 clears.
