Bolles Edges Fleming Island on Late Teixeira Goal

Anthony Teixeira ( Cornell) fired a shot past Fleming Island goalie Ryan Kelly with 5:26 remaining, lifting host Jacksonville Bolles to a 5-4 victory over Fleming Island Tuesday night. Bulldog attack Chris Rogowski found Teixeira alone at the upper left side of the box, and the junior snapped off his game-winner. Rogowski, who scored two goals, had gained control of the ball by winning a battle for a ground ball after it appeared the Bulldogs had turned it over.
The Bulldogs controlled early, possessing the ball most of the first quarter and taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Rogowski, who took a centering pass from Teixeira and fired the ball into the upper right corner of the net, and Ryan Kirchhoff. Bolles led 4-2 in the second quarter after Rogowski’s second goal, this one on a bounce shot from the left wing. Fleming Island stayed within striking distance in the first half on the strength of Kelly, who made six of his nine saves in the first two quarters, and middie Hayden LaVangie, who brought the Golden Eagles within 2-1 by going from midfield all the way to the goal and ripping a shot past the left shoulder of Bulldog goalie Chris Ware. Later in the first half, LaVangie threaded a pass through heavy traffic to teammate Jack Hawley, who underhanded a grounder past Ware. The Golden Eagles gained momentum heading into the intermission when sophomore Sam Barrington fought through four Bulldog defenders in front of the goal and muscled a shot past Ware, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles limited Bolles to just seven shots after surrendering 17 in the first two quarters, and took 14 shots of their own. Fleming Island tied the score halfway through the third quarter on a short-handed goal. Defender Jake William blocked a Bulldog shot attempt, and LaVangie chased down the ricochet. LaVangie then raced down the left sideline all the way into the box, where he found a streaking Will Yarbrough open on the right side. Yarbrough, a sophomore, caught the pass and quickly converted before Ware could turn around. Thirteen tense minutes elapsed until Teixeira’s goal broke the tie. The Golden Eagles had a final possession with 1:12 remaining after defenseman Beau Yarbrough made a strip in the Fleming Island end, but Ware, who finished with 10 saves, was able to get his stick on LaVangie’s as the junior closed in for a shot from the left side. “It was a highly competitive game with a lot of athleticism on both sides,” said Flemong Island coach Jeff LaVangie of what might have been a preview of the district championship game to be played in April. “And their goalie made some unbelievably great saves.” Kirchhoff had two goals for Bolles, who improves to 4-1 on the season. Fleming Island falls to 3-1.
Bolles will head to Ponte Vedra (3-1) tomorrow night and Fleming Island hosts Chiles (4-1).
