Columbus Catholic Throttles Belen Jesuit 17-6

Columbus Catholic dispatched Belen Jesuit with ease Friday night at Tropical Park Stadium, 17-6, improving its record to 7-1. This white hot rivalry between the only two all boys Catholic schools in South Florida delivered as always, bringing out high intensity from both teams. The Explorers established their dominance early. Senior Danny Rancano, who contributed 2 goals on the night, scored just over a minute into the contest. By the end of the quarter, the lead was increased to 4-1 on goals by sophomore Mike Perry and seniors Michael Bulnes and Cody Brais. The Explorer fans dedicated this night to the seniors, hoisting signs honoring their seniors who were playing their last regular season game against the arch rival Wolverines. Fueled by their fans’ electricity, the Explorer seniors did not disappoint. The second and third quarters belonged to seniors Victor Romagosa, Alec Carreras and Nicky Quintairos. Quintairos led all Explorer scorers with three goals and two assists. But the shot of the night belonged to Carreras, who launched an absolute laser that virtually froze the Wolverines’ goalie, Matt Salas. Salas, who recorded ten saves, played valiantly throughout but was no match for the determined Explorers’ squad, whose lead had increased to 14-5 at the end of the third quarter. Salas was also the victim of overly aggressive play by his defense and middies, resulting in several unnecessary penalties which left his team in several man down situations. Jorge Powell led the Wolverines in scoring with 2 goals. Not to be outdone, junior goalie Jon Nickas, playing behind a stout defense led by seniors Zach Garcia and Brett Jacobs and junior Alec Cancio, recorded ten saves of his own in just under three quarters of play.
