MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – In the first two games of the season, Florida Tech (3-0) has shown that at any time during the game this team can go on a run and there’s not much the opposing defense can do but try to limit the damage. On Saturday the Panthers did it again in their showdown with north region opponent Indiana (Pa.).
With the score tied early into the second half, an unassisted goal by Caroline Dunleavy ignited a 7-1 run by the Panthers over a 19 minute span to break the game open as Florida Tech cruised to a 15-11 victory over the Crimson Hawks at Florida Tech Panther Stadium.
”This was a very competitive game against a great IUP team, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” said head coach Corinne Desrosiers. “Both sides would come away with goals, it was going to be who hung in the longest and possessed the ball the best. I am very proud of the girls for displaying a maturity that doesn’t come easily to second year teams, recognizing the game plan IUP was playing and working off it.”
Dunleavy finished the contest with two goals on two shots however it was the play of Sara Grenier that helped FIT knock off the Crimson Hawks. Grenier notched a game-high six points on three goals and three assists. Allie Modica also recorded a hat trick on four shots to go along with three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Sarah Kapinos added three points on two goals and an assist and Mary Gormley had one goal and two assists. Jordan Grantfound the back of the net twice while Sam Schiano and Leah Dunn scored one goal apiece.
An illegal stick for Grant forced the Panthers to start the game a man-down. Ally Burrows took advantage scoring the first goal of the contest 41 seconds in to put IUP up 1-0. Schiano beat her defender on a cut and scored on a feed from Gormley, then Kapinos got her first to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead with 26:54 remaining in the first half.
The Crimson Hawks tallied four of the next five to take a 5-3 edge with more than 22 minute left on the clock. Florida Tech countered, though, scoring four of the next five as well, the final coming on a Modica free possession attempt with one second remaining to give the Panthers a 7-6 advantage at the break.
A quick goal by Kim Hooven tied the contest just 1:03 into the second half, although, just like lighting in a bottle, Florida Tech proceeded on their usual scoring spree. The 7-1 run included two goals each by Dunleavy and Grenier as the Panthers jumped to a 14-8 advantage with 5:15 left in the contest.
It looked as though that was the nail in the coffin for IUP however three goals in succession by Adriana Greco over a span of 1:15 made it a 14-11 game but those would be the final tallies of the game for the Crimson Hawks. Modica would then finish off her hat trick in the waning seconds as the Panthers improved to 3-0 on the season.
Florida Tech held a narrow edge in shots (27-26) and ground balls (24-23) in the game while IUP collected five more draw controls (16-11). The Panthers converted on 5-of-9 free possession attempts compared to just a 1-of-6 performance by the Crimson Hawks.
For IUP, Grecco and Burrows each finished with four goals while Weinberg, the NCAA leader in assists last season, dished out a game-high five dimes in the contest. Brittney Palardy had one goal and an assist and three other Crimson Hawks notched one point.
Florida Tech is back at it Wednesday, March 9 as the Panthers welcome American International to Florida Tech Panther Stadium. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m. ET.
