Lynn: Saints March in on Lacrosse’s Unblemished Season

Gaffney, S.C. – Lynn University’s 18th-ranked lacrosse team met its match on Saturday afternoon as the top-ranked, undefeated and two-time defending national champion Limestone College Saints handed the Fighting Knights their first loss of the season, 16-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- The Fighting Knights were immediately at a disadvantage, drawing a cross-checking penalty on the opening faceoff. Goalie Pat Brotherscame up with a big save between the pipes to save the man-down situation.
- The Saints would open up the scoring shortly after however, notching back-to-back goals surrounding the 12-minute mark. Limestone put away two more early ones, forcing Lynn to take a timeout.
- Lynn capitalized on Limestone’s first penalty of the game as Ryan Madiganslotted a pass from the top of the formation through four defenders to an open Johnny Gavin down low.
- Three goals were then recorded in a 29-second span, including two for Lynn’s Austin Jerhoff. Mikey Ursofound Jerhoff in front of the net for Lynn’s second, but Limestone immediately responded. On the ensuing faceoff, Christopher Lasprogatasnagged the draw cleanly and dished it to Jerhoff for an outside strike.
- The Fighting Knights started off the second frame a man-up following a Limestone offsides call at the previous horn. The Lynn offense took advantage on the first possession as Anthony Rainonebeat the keeper low off another pass from Madigan, making it a 5-4 ball game.
- Lynn peppered the Limestone keeper with shots in the second stanza, but Patrick Sheridan came away with eight saves while keeping the Fighting Knights out of the back of the net for the remaining 14 minutes.
- The home team closed out the half with five unanswered goals to put Lynn down 10-4 at the intermission
- Limestone’s Mike Messenger, the reigning USILA National Player of the Week, made the Fighting Knights pay on a costly turnover with the first goal of the second half. A Lynn offsides turnover shortly after gave Limestone an easy path offensively to make it 12-4 at the 9:13 mark.
- Freshman Peter Mastersopened up the second-half scoring for Lynn with a man-up outside rip.
- Limestone closed out the quarter with three straight goals.
- Working on the left side, Brian Kielcapped the Blue & White’s scoring for the day on an unassisted strike.
- The Lynn defense was able to hold off a two-minute shooting barrage before Limestone shelfed the final goal of the game at 6:39.
- Jerhoff finished as the team’s leading scorer off six shots-on-goal. Madigan led with two assists.
- Freshman Cody Bartusiakcontinues to have an impressive inaugural campaign, tallying a team-high three caused turnovers while Shaun McDonald chipped in two.
- Winger Angelo Beacon-Paglialed his squad with a season-high six groundballs with Brothers, Kiel and Jerhoff combining for 10.
- Brothers turned away 12 shots on a busy afternoon, but was credited with his first loss on the season (3-1).
- Limestone had two players record hat tricks, while their X-specialist picked up 12 groundballs.
- Lynn played its first game on turf this season.
- The Fighting Knights successfully killed off both of their penalties, and scored on 3-of-4 man-up situations.
- The faceoff battle played a critical role in the contest as the Saints won 19-of-25, limiting Lynn to a season-low six wins.
