FLN Weekly High School Media Poll (Well, This Writer Anyhow!) – 2/22/15

Two weeks in the can. Parity continues to spread. Last year’s championship teams have already lost, albeit one to the other.  A few pre-season Top Ten teams are really struggling and a few not even in the Pre-Season 20 are now already in the Top 10.  Deservedly so. But unlike last week, there was no movement among the Top 5 as all of them took care of business and came away with solid wins.  Again, you could throw a blanket over them.  But now you could also start to think that Lake Mary might make it an even half-dozen.  And the Orlando area is also showing some more strength as a few of their programs also make moves up the charts. So without further ado . . . okay, I used that intro last week. How about ‘Let’s Get It On’! Okay, a little corny. Anyone want to suggest some more overused cliches?  Extra credit if you can weave a Monty Python line into it . . .   This Week’s Top 20   #1 – St. Thomas Aquinas #2 – Jupiter #3 – Barron Collier #4 – Ponte Vedra #5 – Lake Highland Prep #6 – Lake Mary #7 – Stoneman Douglas #8 – Vero Beach #9 – Boca Raton #10 – Benjamin #11 – Martin County #12 – Seminole #13 – Bishop Moore #14 – Jensen Beach #15 – Maclay #16 – Saint Andrew’s #17 – Oxbridge #18 – Fleming Island #19 – American Heritage/Boca #20 – Lake Brantley   Dropping Out:  Gulf Coast Also Considered:  A number of schools that have solid records, particularly in the Southeast, but I need to see some more results since a number of them have yet to hit the harder part of the schedule.   STA remains at the top as they traveled to Gulf coast and really put up a strong performance.  The next week looks easy for them and there should be no move down. Jupiter ran the table with three impressive performances this week as they won comfortably at University and followed it up with a gritty win over Stoneman at home and followed that up with a comfortable win over Oxbridge.  This team is senior-laden and plays with a maturity that works very well in close games.  This week they host both boca Raton and LHP so there will be no let-ups.  On paper, the toughest schedule in the state. Barron Collier pulled away in the second half to easily win their Naples Derby with Gulf Coast.  They travel to Oxbridge Friday and if they take care of business you might as well circle the March 13th road trip to STA if you need a lacrosse fix one night! Ponte Vedra continues to dominate it’s opposition and should for awhile.  Bartram Trail comes up Tuesday and March 7th Lake Mary comes to town.  Circle that one Jacksonville-area fans! Lake Highland got back to their winning ways with an 11-7 road win over a surging Seminole program and yesterday easily defeated Benjamin in a rematch of last year’s FHSAA championship game.  On Saturday they travel to Jupiter, looking to avenge last year’s loss. Lake Mary continues to win big and hosts Seminole on Saturday. Stoneman Douglas gained further respectability in the polls with an excellent road effort at Jupiter, even though they eventually went down after holding the halftime lead. It is quite possible that they will run the table as the schedule’s toughest games are now behind them. Vero Beach jumps into the Top 10 with another impressive win as they held off a furious Saint Andrew’s rally last night and defeated the Scots 9-8 in Boca.  The schedule doesn’t get much easier as they head back to Boca on Friday to face Boca Raton.  Last night’s win was even more impressive when you consider that star attackman Tyler Martin was hurt in warm-ups and didn’t play. Boca Raton moves up a few notches by staying undefeated.  A road trip to Jupiter on Tuesday will tell us more about them. Benjamin falls a slot as they continue to struggle on the defensive side of the ball and the LHP game was over in the 3rd quarter.  Their only game this week is our live-streamed game with SA, so we will see two teams in desperate need of a victory. Martin County continues their march up the rankings as they continue to win when they should.  On Friday they will face a very tough district game at resurging Jensen Beach and they will have their own chance to make a Top 10 case. Seminole is really showing well this season and the 11-7 loss to LHP is a quality effort, which they then backed up right away with a solid road win over Lake Brantley.  A home game against Bishop Moore and a road trip to Lake Mary set this week up as their two-week gauntlet plays out.  A two-win week would make their own Top 10 case. Bishop Moore followed up their win over Jensen with a good win over Oviedo and there is enough meat on their schedule’s bones to move higher. Jensen Beach has righted the ship with impressive wins over PJP and American Heritage/Boca and is now going into the district play with a big Friday matchup. Maclay dropped their game with Vero at the Moe’s Classic, and with the exception of the IMG game really doesn’t have anything left to help them out schedule-wise so they’re going to have to make their noise in the playoffs without a signature win this season. Saint Andrew’s is showing an inconsistency and a replay of last year’s shooting woes in their losses.  There are still plenty of tough games left to move back up. Oxbridge hangs on to their spot in the Top 20 but at some point they’ll need to take down one of the big games to keep from falling out. Fleming Island moves up a few spots by staying undefeated and face another undefeated team in Buchholz this week. American Heritage/Boca is hanging on to this spot and needs to show better against the tougher teams to remain here. Lake Brantley is in a similar situation to AH/B.  The Friday game with Bishop Moore looms large.   There are plenty of games coming up between the top teams that will impact these standings this week. Remember, go out and watch a game this week, even if you don’t have a dog in the fight, it’s well worth it!
