Above – FSC’s Grant VanOverbeke courtesy of FSCMocs.com LAKELAND – Florida Southern made history today as the first program to win a Sunshine State Conference men’s lacrosse game in the long history of the conference, taking down Rollins 18-11 at Bryant Stadium. The win was the first of the season for the Moccasins in four tries, pushing their overall record to 1-2 and 1-0 in the SSC. Rollins, who received votes in the latest USILA Coaches’ Poll, drops to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in the conference. The Mocs’ all-time record in the series improves to 5-1 with the win. Senior Shane Tompkins (Bear, Del.) and freshman Grant VanOverbeke (Rosemount, Min.) scored the game’s first goals at 9:10 and 8:51, respectively, to go up 2-0 on the Tars. Carson Buell put a goal on his stat sheet at 6:36 to pull Rollins to within one. The teams traded extra-man goals in the last six minutes of the first half, with junior Dane Sorensen (Victoria, British Columbia) scoring at 5:25 of the opening quarter before Joshua Jenks answered right back with a goal at 1:39 to end the period with FSC leading 3-2. All five goals scored in the first quarter were unassisted. Rollins evened the score at 10:34 of the second quarter off a shot from Adam Stefanowicz before a man-up goal from freshman Cody Dyer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) put the Mocs in front 4-3 just 21 seconds later. Rollins tied the score once again, this time off a goal from Stephen DeFlumeri at 9:35, but seniorChris Murphy (Camillus, N.Y.) scored a man-up goal off a pass from junior Brendan Mykle-Winkler (Langley, British Columbia) to go ahead 5-4 with 7:51 remaining in the quarter. DeFlumeri assisted on an extra-man goal by Nicholas Schultz with 5:32 to go before halftime to draw even with the Mocs 5-5 before Florida Southern scored the next four second quarter goals to go ahead for the remainder of the game. The first goal of the run came off a shot from freshman Tyler Kuhlman (Wellington, Fla.) at 4:08 to put the Mocs up for the rest of the game. SophomoreMatt Boutin (Leonardtown, Md.) scored off a pass from senior Kevin Naslonski (East Setauket, N.Y.) at 2:11 before Sorensen scored his second of the day at 1:10 off a man-down opportunity with Kyle McLaughlin (Woolwich Township, N.J.) assisting to go ahead by three. The sophomore McLaughlin would hear his name called again with six seconds to go before halftime when he squeezed a shot past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season and the sixth of the quarter as the Moccasins went into the locker room with a 9-5 lead. Sorensen continued the Moccasin scoring barrage just :53 into the third quarter on a fast-break goal with senior David Beaumont (New Westminster, British Columbia) assisting to put FSC up 10-5. Stefanowicz broke the Florida Southern scoring run at 14:41 to put Rollins down 10-6. VanOverbeke helped the Canadian Sorensen strike again on a man-up goal at 12:21 of the quarter to put the Mocs back up five before Jack Vonarb put his name in the stat book with a goal at 8:55. Sorensen responded with his fifth goal of the afternoon at 5:09. Rollins brought themselves back to within five with a goal from Jack Dever at 3:30, but Florida Southern came back with two straight goals by Boutin at 1:38 and VanOverbeek at :14 to put the home team up 14-8 going into the final 15 minutes. Jenks scored his second goal of the afternoon to begin the fourth quarter, but VanOverbeke answered right back with another score at 12:55 to put the Mocs up 15-9. A.J. Gogan recorded his first point of the contest at 10:28, but VanOverbeke scored back-to-back goals to put the Mocs up 17-10 late in the fourth. Grant’s first goal came a man-down at 7:41 off a pass from Beaumont, while his second goal came on an even-situation at 3:51. Senior Stephen Boyle (Selden, N.Y.) added his name to the scoring spree with his first goal of the season with 1:26 to go in the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity before Rollins’ Schultz scored the game’s final goal with :42 remaining to give the game its final score. VanOverbeke scored five goals and tallied two assists for a total of seven points, with four of his goals coming in the second half, while Sorensen scored a career-high five goals in the victory. Beaumont, Naslonski and VanOverbeke each tied with two assists on the day, while senior Dan Krispinsky (Fort Myers, Fla.) picked up 11 ground balls and went 17-30 inside the faceoff circle. Freshman Matt Lalli (New Milford, Conn.) earned his first win as a Moccasin by making eight saves on the afternoon, while sophomore Logan Muether (Hilliard, Ohio) and freshman Austin Suarez (Fort Myers, Fla.) each made a stop in fourth-quarter relief. Florida Southern held control in nearly every major statistical category. They outshot Rollins 43-41, scooped up 42 ground balls to the Tars’ 31, won 18-33 faceoffs and scored on 5-9 extra-man opportunities. Rollins did commit fewer turnovers than Florida Southern, with the Tars turning the ball over 16 times to the Mocs 18. Schultz and Stefanowicz each scored three points off two goals and an assist to lead the Tar offense, while Alex Petsos picked up 11 of Rollins’ 31 ground balls. Andrew Sheerin made 10 saves in the loss, the second straight for Rollins after starting the season 0-2. The Mocs return to the turf on Wednesday, Mar. 5, for a non-conference tilt against Lake Erie at 7 p.m. The Moccasins will serve as the season opener for the Storm, who finished last season 12-5 before bowing out in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
