Florida Southern’s Santoli Named SSC Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

thanks to Travis Larner, Athletic Communications Assistant – Florida Southern College for this press release   MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Southern freshman Emily Santoli was rewarded for her efforts in the last two games of the regular season by being crowned the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday.

  The award is the first weekly conference award of the season for Santoli and it marks the eighth consecutive week that at least one Moccasin has taken home either Offensive or Defensive Player of the Week. Overall, the Mocs have earned at least one award in nine of the 11 weeks and FSC has swept both on three occasions. Santoli helped the Mocs finish undefeated at 4-0 inside SSC play with a 22-7 win over Tampa and a 19-4 win over Florida Tech in the regular-season finale. She scored two goals and added two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls against the Spartans (5-11, 0-4 SSC) on April 15. Santoli then scored twice with an assist against the Panthers (7-7, 1-2 SSC) in addition to a career-high three caused turnovers, three ground balls and five draw controls. The midfielder leads all Moccasin freshmen and is third on the team with 36 goals and fourth with 44 points. She is also third in draw controls (47), tied for third in ground balls (42) and fourth in caused turnovers (23). Originally from Fort Salonga, N.Y., Santoli is one of five Mocs to start all 20 games this season. No. 5 Florida Southern finished the 2015 regular season with an 18-2 record and a perfect 4-0 in SSC play. The 18 wins mark a new program single-season record. The Mocs were also ranked No. 3 in the South Region in the first edition of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings. The Mocs will host the 2015 SSC Tournament at Bryant Stadium beginning with the semifinal round on Friday, April 24. Rollins (11-4, 3-1), the second seed in the tournament, will take on the winner of the Florida Tech-Saint Leo (8-7, 1-2 SSC) matchup on Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. The loser of that game will fall to the fourth seed and will play FSC at 6 p.m. on Friday in the second semifinal.
