Florida Teams Looking Good at Tournament of Champions

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
The Florida Elite U19 team will find themselves with a solid seed going into day two of the Dick’s Sporting Good’s Tournament of Champions in Wesley Chapel. The annual club national championship features some of North America’s top club teams in an end of the year national tournament. The Elite (U19) division features two Florida teams. The Florida Elite, who qualified by winning the Derek Pieper qualifier and the host team, Tampa Tribe. New York’s Sweetlax also has two Florida players on the roster; Lake Brantley’s Tim Gehlbach (NC) and Jupiter’s Connor Alexander (Duke.) John McTurk was lighting it up  today for the Florida Elite as was Whitten Roschach of Vero Beach.  Mikey Urso from Pope and  Dawson Allen of Calvary Christian also had solid outings today. Florida Elite was off to a shaky start today losing the first game to New York’s Sweetlax 5-4.  Sweetlax scored the game winning goal on a slow rolling garbage goal off of a ground ball near the crease that managed to find it’s way into the goal in the closing seconds of the game.  They bounced back to deliver a 7-1 thrashing to the Bandit’s from Michigan and followed that up with a 9-1 win over Georgia’s Team Crease.  They finished the day by beating up on the New Jersey Thunder 5-1.  Florida Elite’s fast, smothering defense with lots of quick double teams and excellent transition play was the perfect recipe for today’s short, twenty-five minute seeding games.  They got up early and were able to frustrate opponents who had little time to make adjustments. The Florida Elite U15 Squad had a solid day and should also be looking for a high seed for the elimination round. Brand Ging, according to Coach Andrew Bolger, was “getting it done all day.” Nick Updike was leading the defense and picking up ground balls like a machine. Quinn Spae was getting plenty of possessions for the Elite at the Face Off X and Chris Castalan on the attack quarterbacked a very effective offense that scored eight and nine goals in twenty-five minute games. Florida Elite started the day with a 9-3 thumping of Indiana’s Mad Cats. They took on British Columbia’s Burnaby Mountain Select in their second game. That one ended in a 1-1 tie. Next up was the Bandit’s Lacrosse Club from Michigan. Ging and the Elite delivered an 8-1 victory. They finished the day with a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Crush in an “overly officiated” game on a wet and sloppy field. Although they won’t be the only undefeated U15 team after the first day they should find themselves near the top of the bracket in the sixteen team division. The U15 Palm Beach Storm finished the first day at 3-1. They dropped a 5-2 decision early in the day to Ontario’s Grand River Ironmen.  They then beat the MadLax National Team 5-1, North Carolina’s Red Devil United 6-2, and closed out the day wit ha 6-1 beatdown of Bama Lax.  They will certainly have a solid seed for tomorrow. Also in the U15 division, the Stampede LC had a good day going 2-2.  They beat the Power Play Titans of Michigan and Indiana’s Mad Cats.  They dropped a game  to the perennial national powerhouse FCA National Team and the final game of the day to British Columbia’s Burnbary Mounty Select.  The Stampede got excellent play today from defender Danny Walsh, a freshman at Saint Edward’s and Martin County LSM Jake Ferguson.  Attackman Richie DeVito, Liam Walls and Palm City’s John Senior all scored multiple goals today for Stampede. U11 Palm Beach Storm  started their day with an exciting 5-4 OT win agains Pennsylvania’s Rising Son’s 2020 team.  The Storm got scoring all day from attack men James Dorsey, Chase Hogan, and Chris Ernston as well as middie Aidan Aken.   They topped Crossfire of Georgia 8-2 in the second game and in a battle of the Storm’s they beat Kentucky’s Storm Lacrosse by a 7-1 margin.  In their fourth game of they day they dropped a close one to the Carolina Cannons 4-3 but should still be in good shape for a high seed in the stacked twenty-one team U13 division.  Coaches Dominick Scalzo and Mike Garcia are certain to have the PB Storm ready for a solid day two outing. Florida is well represented in the U11 division with the Blue Devil Elite, Monsters Lacrosse Club, PB Storm, and Tampa Tarpons all qualifying for the championship.     Palm Beach Storm, Tampa Elite, and Tampa Tribe are all in for the U 13 Division.  We will follow all of these clubs tomorrow and keep everyone posted on the progress of all of our Florida Teams and they compete for a National Championship.  More info on the tournament is available at NDPLacrosse.com.  The final seedings and tomorrows schedule will be released by 9:00 tonight.
