CHARLOTTE, NC – Florida Southern College men’s lacrosse gave up four first-quarter goals and was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 17-8 loss at Queens on Sunday at the Queens Sports Complex.
The Moccasins (1-2) found themselves down 4-0 after the first 15 minutes of play as the Royals (2-1) picked up their second-straight win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Royals drew first blood when they found the back of the net with 12:44 to go in the opening period, and seized the momentum by scoring three more goals in the first quarter to take a commanding 4-0 lead.
• Florida Southern got on the board when Dalton Simpson scored in the first three minutes of the second quarter, but Queens answered back with a pair of goals just 17 seconds apart to push its lead to five (6-1) with 11:47 to go in the second.
• Cody Dyer would scored for the Mocs at the 11:12 and 3:29 marks of the second quarter but in between, the Royals poured in four consecutive goals and took a 9-3 lead into halftime.
• The halftime deficit was all the closer Florida Southern would get, as Queens opened the second half with a pair of goals, and scored five-straight from the 6:44 mark of the third quarter to the 11:13 mark of the fourth quarter.
• Queens finished with a 37-35 edge in shots and picked up 37 ground balls to Florida Southern’s 22. The Royals also dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 21-of-29 faceoffs. Florida Southern was called for six penalties and Queens was called for five, but the teams combined to go 0-for-11 in man-up opportunities.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Florida Southern fell to 1-5 all-time against Queens, including 1-3 when facing the Royals on the road. Sunday’s game marked the third-straight year that the Mocs and Royals have played in the regular season.
• Cody Dyer led the Moccasins with three goals while Colin Bayer scored twice. Cam Delisle, Kevin Dyer and Dalton Simpson each scored once.
• Three differenct goalies saw time in the net for Florida Southern. Matt Lalli got the start and made four saves, while Cody Christie made four stops in relief and Austin Suarez tallied a save in seven minutes of action.
• Cody Dyer is one goal shy of becoming just the second Moccasin in school history to reach 100 career goals, joining Dane Sorensen (175) in the 100-goal club.
