CHARLES, MO – Despite a furious rally in the closing minutes of play, Florida Southern College women’s lacrosse was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 14-11 loss at No. 5 Lindenwood on Sunday afternoon. The No. 1 Moccasins (3-2) scored three times in the final minute and a half of play, but the Lions (3-0) held on for the win to snap a two-game losing streak to Florida Southern. HOW IT HAPPENED • Lindenwood struck early with a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of play, but Kendall Kerge answered with her 13th goal of the season to make it 2-1 with 22:50 to go in the first half. The score would remain the same for more than six minutes, until the Lions struck for two more in a 48-second span to go up 4-1. • Emily Santoli‘s free-position goal cut the deficit back to two (4-2)  with 11:16 on the clock, but another pair of back-to-back goals from Lindenwood pushed the lead to four goals at the 6:33 mark. Meghan O’Brien scored twice for the Moccasins in the next minute and a half to make it 6-4, but it was all the closer the Mocs would get. • The Lions scored twice more before the end of the half to take an 8-5 advantage into the locker room, and never led by less than three the rest of the way. Trailing 14-8 with less than two minutes to go, Florida Southern did it’s best to get back into the contest as Shannon Gilfedder, Dani Bursinger and Casey O’Brien scored in succession  in the final 1:30 of the game, but Lindenwood hung on for the win. • Lindenwood finished with a 34-20 edge in shots and collected 32 ground balls to just 22 for the Moccasins. Florida Southern did end the day with a 17-10 edge in draw controls, and was whistled for just 19 fouls compared to 34 for the Lions. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • Florida Southern fell to 2-4 all-time against Lindenwood, including 0-3 when facing the Lions on the road. Sunday’s game marked the fourth-straight year that the teams have played in the regular season. It was the sixth meeting between the squads in the last four seasons, including two NCAA Tournament games. • Bursinger and Kerge each recorded three goals, while Bursinger tallied 11 draw controls. Her 11 draw controls are tied for the second most in a game in school history. • Kerge recorded her 15th goal of the season and the 118th of her career. She moved past former teammate Ashley Robertson (117) for fourth in school history in career goals. UP NEXT • Florida Southern returns home to face Gannon at 7 p.m. on Wednesday before playing host to Fort Lewis (11 a.m.) and West Virginia Wesleyan (2 p.m.) on March 6. The Moccasins then hit the road for games at Young Harris (March 9) and Queens (March 11).
