HICKORY, N.C. – Florida Southern concluded its two-game road swing through the Tarheel State here Saturday afternoon by firing a school record tying 44 shots and scoring 17 goals in its 17-6 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne at the Helen and Leonard Moretz Stadium. With the win, the 11th-ranked Moccasins won its second straight game and improved its record to 7-3 on the season, while Lenoir-Rhyne fell to 6-5 on the year. In Saturday’s win, the Mocs got goals from 13 different players, including two goals apiece from sophomore midfielder Emily Santoli (Ellicott City, Md.), junior attacker Kendall Kerge (Edgewater, Md.), sophomore attacker Cayla Shawfield (Oviedo, Fla.) and freshman attacker Casey O’Brien (Morris Plains, N.J.). Those four players also combined for 25 of FSC’s season high 44 shots, with Santoli taken 11 of those 25 shots. The 44 shots were the most in a game for the Mocs since the Mocs also recorded 44 shots against both Erskine and Catawba during the 2012 season. The previous season high for shots this year was 37 against Gannon (Pa.) on March 2. FSC got on the scoreboard 56 seconds into the game thanks to a goal by senior attacker Ashley Robertson (Ellicott City, Md.). The Bears, though, would respond by scoring three straight goals in a span of four-plus minutes to take a 3-1 lead. That lead would be short-lived as the Mocs would score the final eight goals of the first half to take a 9-3 lead at the half. The Mocs would start the goal-scoring flurry with an unassisted goal by sophomore attacker Meghan O’Brien (Rochester, N.Y.) with 22:40left and Kerge would add a goal nearly a minute later to tie the game at 3. Santoli would then score back-to-back goals, including the first goal coming off a free position shot, to give the Mocs a 5-3 lead. Shawfield, though, would record two consecutive goals at 15:01 and 14:08 to push its lead to 7-3. Along with her two goals, Shawfield added four assists for six points in the win. Senior defender Gabby Barowski (Alexandria, Va.) would score her second goal of the season with 13:38 left to push the Mocs lead to 8-3 and redshirt junior attacker Allie Kryjak (Gaithersburg, Md.) added her second goal of the season with four seconds left in the first half. The Mocs scoring run continued into the second half as they scored the first six goals of the period to take a 15-3 lead. FSC got the second half scoring started with a goal from redshirt sophomore Parrisa Sakinejad (Millers, Md.) with 27:46 left in the game. Casey O’Brien would score the first of her two goals with 26:48 left in the game. Freshman attacker Caitlyn Shoaff (Chuluota, Fla.) gave the Mocs a 12-3 lead just a little over four minutes into the second half and Casey O’Brien would add her second goal with 23:50 remaining to give the Mocs a 13-3 edge. FSC’s next two goals came from freshman attacker Dani Bursinger (Powell, Ohio) and redshirt freshman midfielder Shannon Mazza (Kings Park, N.Y.) to give the Mocs its 15-3 lead. The Bears would stop the Moccasin run of goals with a free position shot by Claire Wach with 17:11 left in the game. Following Wach’s goal, Kerge added her second goal of the game with 14:37 left to give the Mocs a 16-4 lead. LR would add two goals, including a free position shot from Brooke Ouderkirk, to push within 16-6. Sophomore defender Micaela Gately (Stevensville, Md.) concluded the game’s scoring with an unassisted goal with 55 seconds left. Along with recording 44 shots, the Mocs also had a 33-9 edge in shots on goal. LR finished with just 12 shots in the loss. FSC also had a 30-24 edge in ground balls and caused 11 turnovers in the game, including three by Barowski. Barowski also finished the game with six ground balls. Torrey Schwitkis and Aubriana Benedett each had two goals for the Bears. FSC finished the game with a 16-9 edge in draw controls as Santoli finished with six in the win. Junior goalie Taylor Gillis (Bel Air, Md.) was strong in the pipes for the Mocs as she recorded three saves and allowed six goals. Gillis also had one ground ball in improving to 5-2 on the season. Ines Flueck (6-5) took the loss in goal for the Bears as she recorded 16 saves, had three ground balls, caused one turnover and allowed 17 goals. The Mocs will return home to Bryant Stadium to host No. 3 ranked Lindenwood in a 7 p.m. game on Thursday, March 31. Lindenwood picked up a 14-13 double overtime win over the Mocs in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament in St. Charles, Mo.
