FIT rides eight-game streak into matchup with Rollins College on Saturday at 7 p.m.
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech men’s lacrosse (9-1, 1-0 SSC) looks to continue its impressive play into the matchup with Sunshine State Conference foe Rollins College (4-7, 0-2 SSC) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The 12th-ranked Panthers are riding a school record eight-game win streak and are prepared to make it nine straight in their SSC home opener at Palm Bay High School’s Pirate Stadium.
Florida Tech is now 7-1 in the month of March after defeating previously unbeaten MIT 14-7 on Friday. It was an impressive defensive display in the first three quarters, as the teams entered the fourth quarter tied at six goals apiece. Senior Jordan Carlock led a Panther defense that caused 11 turnovers against the Engineers, and redshirt senior Eric Biller totaled 14 saves in the game.
It was all about the Panthers in the fourth quarter as the team racked up eight goals on just 11 shots, while the defense clamped down on the MIT attackers, holding them to just one tally in the final stanza. The Wynne brothers kicked off the quarter by finding each other for consecutive goals.
Zach Wynne found his brother open on the wing for the Panthers’ seventh goal. Nick Wynne then reciprocated; finding his brother on a cut from behind the cage just 40 seconds later to give FIT an 8-6 lead. After an Engineer tally brought their deficit to just one, Zach Wynne found the back of the net again igniting a Panther 6-0 run to end the game.
Senior Zach Wynne paced Florida Tech with three goals and four assists and junior Jason Terry added a hat trick. Junior Nick Wynne finished with two goals and one assist and sophomore Charlie Morrisette recorded one goal and two assists in the win.
Sophomore Travis Wunder had another dominating performance in the faceoff X, winning 20-of-23 draws in the game. Wunder has been a force for the Panthers this season, winning over 60 percent of his faceoff attempts.
Rollins comes into the matchup just off a 14-9 victory over Adams State on March 21. The Tars’ win snapped a four-game losing streak. Carson Buell led the Tars with four goals while Jack Vonarb finished with three goals and three assists. Buell leads Rollins with 32 points this season while Vonarb’s 20 goals are first on the team.
