Florida Tech Takes on Bridgeport at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports
Panthers look to get back on track at “The Place Where Dreams Come True”
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (4-3) prepares for a neutral site matchup with the University of Bridgeport (3-0) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports
The Panthers rode a three-game winning streak into their last game against national powerhouse No. 4 New Haven on Monday. FIT was outmatched by the more experienced Chargers as it fell 18-4.
New Haven controlled possession throughout the first half, rolling out to a 14-1 lead before heading into halftime. The Panthers made adjustments during break and came out with a different game plan in the second half.
FIT’s defense stymied the Chargers attack, causing more turnovers and only allowing New Haven to score four goals the final 30 minutes. Florida Tech’s attack played more aggressive as well, creating more scoring opportunities, leading to three goals for the Panthers.
Sophomore Allie Modica led FIT with two goals and one assist and freshman Sara Grenier added two goals of her own. Two Panthers, sophomore Heather Roache and freshman Mary Gormley, also added assists in the contest.
Bridgeport defeated fellow East Coast Conference opponent Queens (N.Y.) 15-4 on Saturday, March 14 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Queens scored the first two goals of the game, but the Purple Knights rallied off an 11-1 run to take an eight goal lead into halftime. Bridgeport outscored Queens 4-1 in the second half to walk away with its third win of the season.
Gabrielle Valela and Lauren Mengel paced the Purple Knights with four goals apiece. Abigail Benesh scored three goals and dished out one assist in the victory.
Bridgeport faces Ave Maria at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports before taking on Florida Tech on Wednesday.
The Panthers and Purple Knights have faced a common opponent this season, Roberts Wesleyan College. Florida Tech fell to the Redhawks 19-11 in the Panthers’ first-ever game on Feb. 16 and it took Bridgeport two overtime periods to knock off Roberts Wesleyan 12-10 on March 7.
