JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Boasting a 3.126 grade point average in the fall, Jacksonville University student-athletes combined for the second highest departmental term GPA ever recorded. Seventeen of 20 teams finished with a 3.0 or better with women’s golf leading the way at 3.609.
“Homage must be paid to those who set record-breaking numbers academically,” said Lauren Cevis, Jacksonville’s Director of Student-Athlete Services. “Our student-athletes’ consistent effort and determination to be successful cannot go unnoticed. JU has student-athletes who truly embody the student-first mentality.”
Eleven teams improved their GPAs from last fall, the departmental GPA went up .13, and five of the six in-season programs named at least one player to an academic all-conference team.
“We have leaders not only in their respective sport, but also in the classroom,” Cevis continued. “The expectation is that the fall 2015 semester will serve as the launching pad for imminent success, both academically and athletically.”
JU’s Chief Athletics Officer, Dr. Donnie Horner, was enthusiastic in his collective praise for the results: “There is no better place to be a Division I student-athlete than Jacksonville University. Small classrooms, personal attention from a caring faculty, and a culture of academic enrichment make this place special. Our kids win in the classroom and on the athletic field, and success in one venue reinforces success in the other. Academic and athletic success need not be mutually exclusive enterprises.”
