Free Position Shots lead Women’s Lacrosse to Win over Lehigh
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team used four free position goals in the first half to give them a 13-7 victory over Lehigh on Tuesday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field.
“In the first half, we were very patient on the attack,” said volunteer assistant coach Paul McCord. “When you are patient on the attack, you draw fouls and we were able to capitalize on the free positions.”
The Dolphins controlled the draw 14-8 and accumulated 22 ground balls.Danielle Della Rocca and Holly Ventimiglia led the team with a hat trick each, and four other players scored. Defensively, Erika Brager grabbed four ground balls and the team forced nine turnovers.
“In the first half, we had a good edge on draw control,” said coach McCord. “It made a big difference on helping us get out to the 5-1 lead. We also were getting defensive stops when we weren’t getting as many draw controls in the second half.
To open the game, reigning player of the week, Ventimiglia scored first on a diving shot for Jacksonville to lead the team on a 4-0 run. The Dolphins and Mountain Hawks exchanged goals back and forth until the end of the half. Ventimiglia scored the final goal of the half off a free position shot which put the team up 7-4.
“We really capitalized as a team on Lehigh’s style of defense,” said Ventimiglia. “As soon as I saw the lane (on the opening goal), I just took it and ended up diving to get the goal.”
Following halftime, Jacksonville score the first two goals, with a Sally Holbert goal from a Jess Worcester assist and a Hannah Wilcox goal from an Abby Remenapp assist. The Dolphins only allowed the Mountain Hawks to score on a three goals in the second half. Jacksonville ended the game on a 4-0 run with goals from Brittney Orashen, Jaime Chapman and Holbert.
The Dolphins return to D.B. Milne Field, Sunday March 15 at 1 p.m to face Stony Brook.
