The Senior Division of the Florida Lacrosse Association (FLA) held a ‘Super Saturday’ championship round on May 4th. The top 4 teams from the Spring season faced off to crown this year’s champion.  In the morning, the undefeated West Orange Outlaws beat the South Orlando Renegades (6-2 in the regular season) by a score of 16-3.  In a contest close throughout, the Lake Mary Mohicans (7-1) squeaked by the Jokers Lacrosse Club (6-2) by a score of  7-6, setting up the final, held that same afternoon at the Lake Brantley High School stadium. In a rematch of a hard-fought game from two weeks earlier, won by the Outlaws, the Mohicans struck first on an unsettled possession  —  a low rip from Payton Rivers finding the mark.  The Mohicans were able to keep the Outlaws on their heels early, moving the ball crisply on offense, and holding the prolific Outlaws offense at bay.  Mohicans Goalie Michael Hubbard made several spectacular saves to set the tone, and Kyle Sande did yeoman’s work at the face-off ‘X’, providing his squad with extra possessions throughout the day. The Mohicans slowly but steadily built a lead throughout the first half, despite the inspired play between the pipes from Sam Malaussena, who  would end the day with 11 saves.  The Mohicans soon had a four goal lead against a powerful Outlaws team that hadn’t lost in two seasons.  In fact, the Outlaws hadn’t trailed at all during the 2013 FLA spring season.  Once they’d seized the lead on this day, however, the Mohicans would not let the Outlaws get any closer than 4 goals for the rest of the contest. In a full team effort. the battle for ground balls was won by the gritty Mohicans, 38-34.  Rivers, Sande and Taylor Ayres all tallied multiple goals, but ultimately a total of seven Mohicans found the back of the net in the 12-7 victory.  The Outlaws leading scorer for the season, Jason Sullivan, was able to fight through the talented Mohicans defensive squad to tally one goal and one assist. It was a fitting conclusion to a terrific FLA season.  Both teams played hard and exhibited great skill and athleticism.  Congratulations to Coach Jordan Supraner and his Lake Mary Mohicans  —  2013 FLA Spring season champs!
