Battle of the Hotbeds and Long Island Legends Camp What was your first lacrosse experience? And how long have you been playing? I have been playing since 4th grade. My best friend Alex Pantaleon and I both wanted to play a sport together. His older brother had been playing lacrosse for Olympia at the time so we decided to start throwing around with him. We became so obsessed with it that throwing with each other became a part of our daily routine. Eventually, we joined the local club team, West Orange County Outlaws, and continued playing ever since. What is your favorite lacrosse memory? Playing in the Long Island Legends camp for Coach Joe Cuozzo, Rick Mercurio, and Mike Gongas. They are excellent coaches that I have learned a lot from. How would you describe your style of play? Tenacious and aggressive. What do you think is the strongest part of your game? What are you working to improve? My strongest part of my game is my endurance. It is one advantage to be tenacious, but to be tenacious for all four quarters is what sets me apart from everyone else. I really want to improve on not trying to do everything myself. Alex AkenSometimes being highly aggressive all the time can be dangerous. I need to learn to be a little more patient and trust my teammates. What is important to you in selecting a college? A strong sense of Christian community, comforting campus, and a positive coaching staff. What do you think you will study in college? I plan on earning a Master’s degree in Divinity or Pastoral Counseling. Which college team or players do you most enjoy watching? Michael Pellegrino. He’s tenacious, aggressive, a powerful leader, and it is a happy coincidence that we both wear number 34. Who was your biggest lacrosse influence? Gary Bitz and Jim Malaussena. They coached me to use my aggression to benefit the team. What is your lacrosse goal for 2016? It means a great deal to my team to win a district championship. I will sacrifice all I have to help them accomplish it. How would you describe your high school team? We play for the love of the game. How would you like your teammates to describe you? A three-pronged leader: leads by example, leads by voice, and leads with compassion. What accomplishment are you most proud of? My awards have been fantastic, but what I am most proud of is that I have been described by teammates as the hardest worker, most caring, and the best leader. The fact that I have been able to leave a mark on my teammates because of the person I am, not just my lacrosse abilities, is what really makes me proud. To me, that is the greatest accomplishment. Do you have any pre-game rituals? I lay on the bench in the locker room and listen to military cadences. What is the last thing you binge watched on Netflix? Malcolm in the Middle. Twitter or Instagram? Instagram.
