Two state juggernauts battled back and forth in Ponte Vedra Friday night, finally settling the game in double overtime. The PV Sharks hosted defending North Carolina state champions Charlotte Catholic in a Brine King of Spring Lacrosse Classic matchup. Both teams played hard and fast with neither getting more than a 2-point margin. The Cougars led 6-4 at the half. But Ponte Vedra attacker Miles Silva and midfielder Eric Applegate came out strong and quickly tied it up again. The lead changed throughout the second half marked by play that was intense, physical and evenly matched. With 12 seconds left on the clock and the Sharks leading 14-13, the Cougars scored and sent the game into overtime. The first OT expired with neither team able to get past the opponent’s goalie. Then in the second sudden-death period senior middie Logan Taucher pinned the ball top left, giving Ponte Vedra the victory. It was Taucher’s third goal of the night. Silva, a senior committed to Army and this week’s InsideLacrossePreps Player of the Week, led scoring for the Sharks with six points. Seamus Byrne was the leading scorer for the Cougars with three goals and one assist. Charlotte Catholic travels to St. Augustine for its next game. Ponte Vedra, now 9-1, plays undefeated Lake Mary at home Saturday in what is expected to be another close game.
