As mentioned two days ago, St. Edward’s School of Vero Beach, brought a top tier team to take on the St. Andrew’s Scots in Boca Raton. Strong defenses dominated this contest and the penalty box had a view more visitors than normal on both sides. In the end, St. A finished ahead of St. E 11-7.
Nick Iznaga scoring
Take a look at this sequence of Vero’s Austin Schepers (above) stripping Scots’ senior Nick Iznaga – really well executed. Austin played with abandon and skill the whole game. Nick had his moments, too, scoring two goals and causing match-up issues which freed up others.

For St. Edward’s, Chase Stokes kept us all guessing with his fake shots, including the one shown here. He did fire enough to score three goals and is one of the more interesting players we have watched. Alex Houk was all over the field facing off and leading the team in points with two goals and two assists. Ritter Marchant and Matthew Taylor each added a goal and an assist and goalie AJ Leiva was credited with 14 saves.

Others who stood out for St. Edward’s included Kaden Brothers, Michael Villafuerte and Gage Bartosch. A few may have been missed as this was a hard working team effort. St. Edward’s has a great season ahead, one which should find them ending in the top ten and maybe higher.
The Scots continued their improvement and undefeated season. Little doubt they will compete in every game and we saw a number of new faces receiving increased playing time. Michael Lizzio, Carl Klepper, Gryphon Gurin, Adam Stiefel and Matt Adams were key players in the younger classes. Senior Daniel Zamora continues to improve at face-off and junior Xavier McCormack had a solid outing.

a challenge
St. Andrew’s is lucky enough to have three starting level goalies and the coaches have split time between seniors Andrew Busel and Jack Young and junior Nick Ferraro. Mark Heatzig looked confident in strong playing as a two way middie and scoring two goals. Tito Thompson chipped in with two assists.
St. Edward’s hosts Gulliver tomorrow in what should be another high quality game. The game of the weekend is probably tonight as undefeated state champion St. Thomas Aquinas hosts Orlando’s Lake Highland Prep, also undefeated and the previous state champion. The Scots travel to Benjamin tomorrow for yet another unbeaten match up of powers. Good stuff so early in the season!
